poetchik's Full Review: Reinhard Engels and Ben Kallen - The No S* Diet: N...
The No S* Diet is the first diet I've seen that you can start simply by reading the cover of the book. The premise of No S* is simple: No Snacks, No Sweets, No Seconds except on Days that Start with S. Although this diet sounds unbelievable, after reading the book, I was inspired to give the No S* Diet a try.
The No S*diet was not created by an diet guru or well known celebrity but was created by Reinhard Engels, a engineer who was tired of fad diets and is co-authored by a Ben Kallen, a writer for magazines such as Men's Fitness and Shape. The book is divided into seven chapters which begins by answering why obesity has increased due to excess eating, then explaining the No S* Diet in depth and then concludes with life beyond the No S* Diet.
In reference to how days are labeled in the No S* Diet, Monday through Thursday are named N days or normal days while Saturday, Sunday and Special days are called S Days. Normal days are those in which you don't snack, eat sweets or have seconds (more than one plate of food) while S Days are days when you can have sweets, snack and second helpings. Special days are defined as a national or religious holiday and birthdays of close family and friends.
The second chapter highlights one of the major causes of obesity as snacks. While the authors have no issue with healthy snacks, Engels & Kallen feel that when a person snacks (whether it's healthy or unhealthy), the authors tend to underestimate how many extra calories they are eating. They feel that the best way to counteract this problem is by eliminating snacks which will prevent overeating.
The third chapter discusses not having sweets. Although the authors say to not have no sweets, they do a good job of separating what are considered sweets versus sugar. While they do say that fruits are good to eat, fruits are best eaten with a meal.
The fourth chapter deals with not having seconds as well as how this rule serves as a shortcut to portions control. This chapter also discusses how to use the one plate rule in regards to side items such as bread and salad what to do if you're still hungry after eating.
The fifth chapter goes more in depth about S Days and answers why S Days are necessary in order to lose weight, vacations, and what to do if you work on weekends. The sixth chapter helps the reader begin to build the No S* habit. This chapter is especially helpful because it explains how to recover from a failure, putting the scale in perspective, and what to do if the diet is not working.
The final chapter is about life beyond the no s*diet and discusses combing the no s*diet with other diets, junk food, exercise, and the on-line support group.
This book also has a companion website:www.nosdiet.com which has a bulletin board to talk to other people on the no s* diet, see videos of exercises Engels refers to in his book and you can also use the habitcal which he created to chart your progress while on the No S*Diet.
Overall, this was a very helpful book that can help you lose weight through moderation.I really enjoyed the friendly writing style used by the authors which was shown by writing the book in a question and answer format. I also liked that by being on the No S* Diet, I am able to eat three meals a day and if I do feel the need to splurge, I can look forward to doing it on the weekend.
