JediKermit's Full Review: Michael Green and Mike Johnson - Superman / Batman...
One of the things that makes Superman a challenging character to write in comic books, television or movies is that he's pretty much invulnerable. It's what we all love about him, but it makes any threat against him kind of pointless. Except, of course, for Kryptonite. The glowing green chunks of his homeworld are the only thing that can kill him, and it seems like there's tons of it that somehow made their way to Earth.
The 2008 comic book collection Superman/Batman: The Search for Kryptonite is about how the world's greatest heroes team up to rid the world of this deadly threat once and for all: ensuring Superman's safety and making the world a safer place. It starts with an accident of sorts--Kryptonite has become so ubiquitous that it's being used as movie props, in museum displays, even in engagement rings. When a movie prop explodes into shards that penetrate Superman's skin, he realizes it's time to change the world. At first Batman is reluctant--he feels that Kryptonite just makes Superman as fragile and human as any other mortal; after Superman convinces him to help, they work together to rid the world of Kryptonite.
The six issues collected in this hardcover volume are written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson, and illustrated by Shane Davis and Matt Banning. They get the characterization between Batman and Superman right; a lot of this is in the form of inner dialogue in blue and yellow bubbles on the page, and much of it is in their dialogue with each other. As much as they work together, they don't always agree with the other superhero, and even as Batman is ridding the world of Kryptonite, he wonders if he's doing the right thing.
There are plenty of "guest appearances" by both heroes and villains in the book, including Aquaman, Flash, Zatanna, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and other Justice Leaguers; villains include a new set of Kryptonite-fueled mutants headed up by Amanda Waller...and the United States government. This knowledge, that the government he swears to defend has been preparing to kill him, weakens Superman as much as the radioactive element from his homeworld does.
This was an exciting, entertaining read with unexpected twists. If you're a fan of Superman or Batman, you'll enjoy Superman/Batman: The Search for Kryptonite.
