IrishMa4's Full Review: Linda Windsor - Wedding Bell Blues
Your dad calls you into his office to ask you to help your Mother with your sisters wedding. Fine. Oh and the best man is your ex husband. Fine. Oh and I bough the house you shared with your ex husband can you fix it up so I can give it to your sister as a wedding gift?
Yikes hows a girls supposed to do all that and not have a nervous breakdown? The Bosom Buddies to the rescue!
In Wedding Bell Blues by Linda Windsor Alex should be on top of the world. Next month she is making her last payment on the loan she took out from her fathers bank to purchase the building that houses her business and apartment. Shes doing it a year ahead of schedule.
Naturally when anything happens in the lives of one of the Bosom Buddies they celebrate with a Sundae Lunch at the country club diner.
The Bosom Buddies consists of Alex Butler, Sue Ann Quillen (Susie Q), Jan Kudrow, and Ellen Brittingham. They have been friends since forever, despite the differences among the girls.
Alex is divorced from Josh, her high school sweetheart, owns her own successful decorating business. She tries, mostly in vain, to make her Daddy proud. She is actually a lot like him but he doesnt give her the credit she deserves in life. Hes totally insensitive to her feelings as you can tell when he asks her to decorate the house she lived in as a new bride for her sister!
Sue Ellen is married to a rich man who travels half the month on business. She is so wealthy and so vain she has a live in hair dresser. That doesnt make her a snob or someone you dont want to know. Shes very sweet. You can just hear the southern belle in this charming woman. I thought she seemed a bit lonely as well. There is talk of her adoring husband, and she is busy with things and, of course, the Bosom Buddies but I just got the feeling that she was very lonely.
Jan Kudrow is a girl who came from the wrong side of the tracks: a cute little imp of a girl who they called Tinkerbelle because of her petite build and short blond locks. In the dictionary under dysfunctional family is a picture of the Kudrows. Jan is an aspiring pastry chef.
Ellen Brittingham is your typical tomboy. There is always one in the group. I found her to be the most fun. Shes what every straight-laced girl dreams of being. She rides a Harley, can fix any engine on the road, and co-owns a professional landscaping business with her parents.
Josh Turner was Alexs husband. He wanted to be a rock star. Alex just wanted him to bring home enough money to help support them, and playing in a band on weekends is not going to do that. Josh decides to leave town, leaving behind Alex and a note saying he will send for her when hes made it big.
Fast forward 16 years and Josh is back in town. He made it big alright, but left Alex behind in the dust. He never sent for her and they never spoke a word again. His rock star career ended in a tragic car accident that left Josh unable to play guitar anymore. He came back home successful and claiming to have found religion. After all, when you are rock bottom there is no place to go but up.
Alex cant quite decide if Joshs newfound religion is legit or not. She cant decide if her love for Josh is dead and buried or just buried and wanting to surface. Could she risk her heart again with the same man who trampled it?
Shes given lots of opportunity to find out. With the wedding just months away and Josh being the best man to her maid of honor, they are thrown together constantly.
While Josh has shown remarkable growth, can Alex really trust him not to run off and let her down again?
And then there is the problem by the name of B.J. Butler (Alexs father). Josh and B.J. hate each other and hackles raise whenever the two are in the same room. Josh and B.J.s relationship strained the marriage between Alex and Josh. Her father never approved of the marriage and did all he could to put pressure on the marriage, and more!
When B.J. is in trouble Alex must help him but is reluctant to turn to Josh. When he finds out what Alex is doing he is perplexed. Why is she with Will? And why didnt she trust Josh enough to tell him of her fathers troubles did she think Josh would gloat that all was not right in B.J.s world?
Wedding Bell Blues by Linda Windsor is a lighthearted romantic comedy if you will. It tells the story of love gone badly yet granted a second chance. It tells the story of a girl who wants to be the apple of her fathers eye but ends up feeling like the worm at every turn. It tells the story of everlasting friendships formed among young girls growing up. And it tells the story of a mans journey towards God.
I was very impressed by this story. If it were me that were jilted the way Alex was Im not sure I could be so forgiving, so loving, and so gracious to God about it. To be honest I think I could be quite ticked off at God if you want to know the truth.
Alex isnt though. She has faith. She doesnt have as much faith in herself as I think she should though because of her father.
But Alex, like many of us, realizes that life and all it entails is not always the way we seem to think it is. Sometimes we dont know why people are the way they are. Sometimes they mean more than we think they mean with their words and actions.
The library classifies this as religious fiction. Id say that is a part of this book, but not all of it by any means. It was nice to have relationships between men and woman that didnt involve jumping in and out of beds.
The people in Wedding Bell Blues generally cared about one another and did their best to make a difference. To be quite frank there were times when I was surprised that they were characters in a book and not real people. Thats how much I liked them.
Linda Windsor is not an author Ive read before, but you can bet your bookmark I will be reading her again!
If you have the tiniest spark of romance in you, find and read Wedding Bell Blues and travel along with Alex and her friends in a hilarious tale of true love, faith, and hope.
