| konerkid's Full Review: Bruno |
Sacha Baron Cohen has put audiences through the most uncomfortable movies starting with of course Ali G Indahouse, which came out in 2002 and then with Borat in 2006. Cohen stars as his gay Austrian fashinista/ Television personality Brüno. Starting off with a quick overview of Brüno's life and how he hopes to regain his celebrity status, after realizing that the fashion industry is very shallow and superficial. By going through various interviews, meetings. and celebrities and more, Brüno tries to rekindle his legacy, by tackle big issues like adoption, homosexuality and politics. Directed by the same man that directed Borat, Larry Charles, the same nuances of Borat have been obviously transferred into Brüno, aiming for the same effect. Which will make you cringe and try and hide from the screen because you don't want to see what will happen or you have already seen it. Brüno takes the pure vulgarity of Cohen's performance as Borat and has taken up a notch in every which way. On a downside, the opposing character, Lutz, played by Gustaf Hammarsten, is unbelievably weak and plays more of a prop then a role in the film. Pepper in a few celebrities, which are mostly at the end, which, without giving anything away, is still ridiculous. I feel that Brüno is as outrageous and vulgar and tries very hard to land at least one humorous punch on even the most stone faced of people. I will give it to Cohen he is a very gifted actor with a lot of potential, and perseveres with the comedy genre. I'm sure we will see much more of him in the future even though all of his characters have been used up in film industry. I think it would be great if he thought up of a character completely on his own and attracted an enormous audience out of curiosity without a real explanation of his character. Brüno is an absolutely outrageous movie, which wasn't shocking because of the past films that Cohen has starred in. I want to emphasize that this film is definitely not for anyone under the age of 18, it has highly x-rated material and should not be seen with parents. Which was a pretty obvious statement. I appreciate Cohen's enthusiasm and loyalty to pull a joke, he goes very far, most often then not too far to get a laugh, which I applaud him for, but that is not worth the full price ticket. I would only recommend that for the die-hard fans who are guaranteed good laughs. Cohen is very hit or miss material and can be deemed as highly offensive. For everyone else that doesn't fit into that category that is still curious, catch the matinee with some friends and see what happens.
