After having my 4th child I had heard all the hype about the Baby Bumbo Seat so I decided to give it a try. I did all the research asked all the questions and decided to go and buy one only to be sorely disappointed. This seat is not made for the larger than average baby. And until Bumbo designs a larger one it will leave those of us moms with Jumbo baby’s out.
So what exactly is a Bumbo seat?
This little light weight seat weighs about 3lbs and is made from a low density foam material so it can be manipulated easily and makes for very easy travel use and can be cleaned easily which is a plus for any mom. This seat has no Latex in it and is made from non-toxic polyurethane.
Let’s answer some questions!
If you are a mom you have a lot of questions about this seat so let’s answer them.
1. What age range should be using the Baby Bumbo?
The Bumbo seat is designed for babies that can support their heads with out any aide from mom or dad and should be used until the child can get out of the seat on their own. So based on your child you could use it for a short time or a long time.
2. Is there a weight limit on the Baby Bumbo?
There is no weight limit for this seat, however the Bumbo website does recommend that you stop using the seat before your child is able to crawl out of it.
3. Can the Bumbo be used in the bath tub?
NO, this is a light weight foam material and is not able to be used in water for any reason. It can tip easily if not anchored down and there is no way to anchor this seat into water.
4. Does the Bumbo come in any other size?
No this seat comes in one size only, however Bumbo is working on creating a larger seat made for special needs children.
5. What is the Purpose of a Bumbo seat?
The purpose of a Bumbo seat is to not only promote good spinal growth but to also aide your child in sitting up.
What I liked about the Bumbo
Over all there were a lot of key features that I loved about this seat. It is very affordable costing just $39.95. That is cheap for a light weight portable chair if it works for your child. It is really easy to clean and is small enough it can be stored anywhere. It also travels well since takes up very little car space. It also comes in many colors like Aqua, Pink, Blue, Lilac, Lime and Yellow. The color varieties are excellent on this chair; you can be very gender specific or be gender neutral. The Bumbo also has won many awards such as the iParenting media award, industrial design award, as well as being a runner up in the Most Innovative product award in the UK.
How do I clean the Bumbo?
So you fed your baby Spaghetti in the Bumbo or that stage 2 jar of carrots and now the Bumbo is a mess. There are 2 methods in cleaning the Bumbo seat. One is to put it in the sink and wash with hot soapy water and a sponge, this is known as the mom method. Two is you can take it out back, hook up the pressure washer and proceed to blow it around the yard with water coming out at 500PSI, this is known as the dad method. This chair is safe to use bleach on as well so you can keep it clean and disinfected.
Other positives about the baby Bumbo seat this information was obtained from http://www.babybumboseat.com
This is a wonderful chair designed originally for special needs children. It comes highly recommended by many Pediatric and Orthopedic Faculties. Most occupational therapist will have these in their offices as well and it used in most all ECI programs through out the USA. The Key feature of this seat is that it is at a lower level than the le openings which provides correct support for the Lumber area of the vertebral column. It has an orthopedic effect that assists in spinal development of most infants and the raised leg spaces help increase baby’s flexibility in the hip and knee joints, decreasing any stress on the baby’s spine. The front support doesn’t push on your baby but prevents your child from sliding forward.
Is there a downside to this seat?
Yes there is, as I have said before this is a great seat if you have an “average” baby however those moms who have the tiny baby or the mom with the Jumbo baby will not be able to use this seat effectively.
The smaller baby will not fit properly in this seat causing the baby to slide down into the seat incorrectly. And the larger baby just won’t fit at all. My son who was 4 months old at the time weighed a whopping 25lbs at that age. While there is no weight limit on thus seat it just wouldn’t fit his chubby little thighs. Also a larger baby will be able to flop the chair over much more easily which is why the Bumbo should never be used on an elevated surface.
Are there any Accessories for the baby Bumbo?
Why yes there are! The baby Bumbo has a tray that can be attached to the seat that promotes hand eye coordination for your baby. You can purchase these trays separately or you can buy some seats with the tray. If you already have the seat the tray is usually $9.95 each. You can also purchase the baby Bumbo Potty seat. This seat is made from the same light weight foam as the seat but is not used on the Bumbo seat; it is used on your toilet to help your older child potty train. The potty seat comes in Pink, blue and ivory and can not be purchased in stores yet but you can find them on line for about $29.95
Safety Warnings
Never ever leave your child unattended in a Bumbo. Never place the Bumbo on a table, counter, chair or other elevated surface and walk away. If your child arches their back far enough or moves back and forth quickly this chair will tip and can result in an injury to your baby. Never use Bumbo in water, this is not a flotation device, it will not anchor into a tub and should never be used during bath times.
My overall epinion
Overall I think this design is pure genius, light weight, durable, washable, easy to use. But the fact that you really can’t use it with a small baby or a really large baby is a big downsize to me. I attempted to use mine after purchasing it and ended up having to send it back to Bumbo because it just didn’t work for my child.
Where can I purchase a Bumbo? You can purchase limited colors of Bumbo seats at your local Target or Wal Mart stores or locate them online at places like http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.ebay.com/, http://babybumbo.com
