Caesar's Palace: I came, I saw, I lost!

Pros: Large,"Vegas-style" rooms; great in-room amenities
Cons: Non-smoking rooms are at a premium. You can walk forever before getting off the property!
The Bottom Line: Caesar's Palace has large rooms with lots of marble and glass; huge, scrumptious buffet; plenty of slot machines and table games; upscale shopping area.

Casesar's Palace is a huge, noisy megaplex filled with lavish food bars, clanging and hungry slot machines, toga-clad waitresses, and a wide variety of shops and specialty stores. There are statues and moving sidewalks, fountains and sculptures in every direction. It is Vegas, after all, and what could be more royal than a stay at Caesar's Palace?
Caesar's Palace reminds me of the best of Las Vegas before it started turning into a Disneyworld in the desert. I remember marveling at the beauty and splendor of Caesar's Palace on my first visit to Las Vegas many years ago. It is still elegant (if anything in Vegas can truly be elegant) and classic in design.
Check-In
I stayed here a couple of years ago as part of a large sales meeting. When I arrived there was a very long line for check-in. However, I knew many of the people standing in line so it helped to pass the time a little. It also helped that there were waitresses circulating through the line with tray of cold water and soft drinks.
Much to my dismay I was given a smoking room when I checked in. I was greatly disturbed by this (having a flashback to several years before when I had to stay in a smoking room in Reno that almost killed my sinuses) and politely informed them my reservation had been for non-smoking.
They somewhat politely, but ever-so-firmly informed me they had no more non-smoking rooms available. The clerk did add that mine was an upgraded room and I would be very pleased with it.
Off to the room -- through the Casino, of course!
I set off with my luggage to find my "upgraded" room somewhere in one of the vast tower locations. (It is a very large hotel and, like all Vegas hotels, you have to pass through the casino areas to get anywhere.)
I consoled myself with the fact that by the time I left the smoky casino I wouldn't notice if my room smelled like a stale ashtray or not.
The Room
My room was very nice and very large. The clerk had been right. The bathroom was huge, with a big whirlpool tub and extra large marble shower. There were two sinks and a vanity/make-up mirror with stool.
The towels were large and fluffy (I do love that in a hotel) and in great abundance! I absolutely loved the toiletries they provided -- they were in Roman column-shaped bottles and came in a set of four. (I later saw them at the gift shop where they could be purchased for $10 per set as souvenirs.)
There was plenty of "Miami Vice" glass (glass squares) in the bathroom design, as well as lots of mirrors. Yes, indeed I was in Vegas and hadn't even made it to the bedroom yet. I had fallen in love with the bathroom.
It also had a separate "potty closet" complete with phone! I had to overlook the fact that it also had a multitude of ashtrays. However, it didn't reek of smoke and everything was spotlessly clean.
Sleeping Area
The room had two queen size beds, along with a couple of comfortable chairs and a nice size television in the armoire.
Everything was comfortable and clean and surprisingly smoke-free. Maybe I had lingered too long in the casino area and my senses were dulled already. The room seemed fairly light and airy and was tastefully decorated.
Casino
Caesar's Palace certainly has plenty of slot machines. After being there for several days, I found another area I had overlooked in my previous exploits. I found the slots to be varied in denomination and style, but they all had one thing in common where I was concerned -- they were very stingy.
After returning home, I joked that I had found only one machine in Caesar's that would give me money. That was the ATMs that they have strategically placed throughout the casino!
Shops
There are a wide variety of shops in Caesar's. It's like a mini-mall underneath a painted sky. I think my two favorite things in the shopping area were the Brookstone store (where they let you sit in the massage chairs without complaint) and the huge statue of David that I used to help me keep my bearings inside the huge Caesar's complex. Well, some things do remain in a woman's mind longer than others!
Meeting Facilities
Did I mention how big the hotel and convention area is? There are ample meeting facilities -- they can accommodate many small breakout sessions or very large general sessions.
Food
The food I had as part of the meetings reminded me of most hotel convention food -- overpriced and average in taste. However, the buffet was really incredible. Even in the glory days of the Romans, I doubt that had as many and varied offerings as Caesar's provided.
There were many salads, meats and vegetables from which to choose, as well as a scrumptious display of desserts sure to satisfy any sweet tooth!
Overall Recommendation
I enjoyed my stay at Caesar's Palace and liked window shopping at some of the boutiques it houses. My room was very nice and comfortable (what little time I spent there) and the lack of a non-smoking option didn't create havoc with my allergies. I would probably stay there again sometime with my husband.
The only real stroke of luck I had at Caesar's was that my pre-assigned roommate (company function) never showed up, so I had my big, luxurious room all to myself!
