beatleman's Full Review: Calvin Klein Obsession 4oz Spray by Calvin Klein f...
My very first exposure to this cologne was at least a decade ago when I was 13 or 14 years old. My Dad had been using the cologne for quite a while and I remember him telling me that some of his last patients of the day would still notice the scent and comment on how nice his cologne smelled (this being after 8 hours at work!). I decided to ask for it for Christmas that year, and ever since that year I've always had a bottle in use and an extra under the sink for when it runs out. I tried other colognes (Hugo Boss was also a good cologne and Curve was interesting for a short while), but in the end I always came running back to Obsession.
I really can't say how much hearing my memories will affect a person's decision to buy a cologne, but all the same I'll relate one. I remember a few years ago I was chatting with a girl I used to really like and hadn't seen for a few months. She told me that she really missed me AND that she missed how she could always smell my Obsession when we would meet up. They say that smell is the strongest sense when it comes to nostalgia and making neuronal connections regarding past events, so if you want someone to remember you by your scent, Obsession may be the best way to go.
It's hard to describe in words what a cologne smells like. The closest smell I can associate this cologne with is the smell of cinnamon, but with a slightly musky aspect to it. I know musky cinnamon doesn't sound like a smell you'd want lingering, but trust me when I say that most people really like it when they smell it. Also (and in my opinion just about as important), I personally really enjoy the smell. Considering I'm the one that will be smelling it without fail every morning, I'd say being a fan of my own cologne is a good thing :-).
The makers of the cologne state that the notes of lavender, mandarin, clove, nutmeg and amber are present. I can't say that I note any of these notes myself, but then maybe that's why I don't get paid the big bucks to test scents...
As a warning, though, this cologne can tend to run a little stronger than other colognes I've tried and tends to last longer. I used to put on three sprays in the morning, but after the 2nd time I had a girl tell me "You overdid it with the cologne," I cut it back to one spray and one spray-and-walk-into-the-'cloud' run (and if that's something nobody else does, than ignore the latter part of that sentence).
Pricewise, this cologne isn't terribly expensive for being a Calvin Klein product. Fortunately I usually get it as a traditional Christmas gift from my Mom, but it's affordable enough that when I had to buy it on my own it didn't break the bank.
As with any cologne, though, before buying I think you should go to the store first. Put some cologne on your neck, then wait a few minutes and have your girl (or guy, if that's your thing) smell it on you to make sure it blends well with your chemistry. It sounds pretty silly, but colognes really do smell different on different people. Sometimes different is a good thing, but sometimes it's not.
