popsrocks's Full Review: Century Novelty Chinese Yo Yo
The Chinese Yo-Yo found in many novelty shops, magazines, and web sites has always been a special toy that I have enjoyed and to some extent mastered.
For those who aren't up on such innovative and exciting "international" toys this is a simple nine/ten inch stick with a waxed type paper wrapped tightly around it. The paper has a bit of body keeping it from losing shape. The paper on these have a striped design on them. They come in a number of different colours.
The idea of a "Yo-Yo" is that with a flick of a wrist the paper travels away from the stick and then with a slight opposite motion of the hand comes back to a resting position again wrapped around the stick.Like a Yo-Yo the motion goes back and forth away from the hand and then returning.
Just to be clear, there does happen to be another toy that originated in China during the Ming dynasty that is more true to the words Yo-Yo. It's consists of two circular discs like the Yo=Yo we all know but has a longer axle and is controlled by a person using a long string attached to two sticks. It's also known as the Pull Bell.
The Chinese Yo-Yo we talk of in this review made of stick and paper coil is a much simpler toy.
Pops World Wide Experience
In traveling the world introducing this international toy that I first discovered in a remote Chinese village on the edge of the Gobi desert near Mongolia, I have been fortunate to master it via the great Yo-Yo masters of Asia. Perhaps this is getting too deep with...never mind.
This particular Chinese Yo-Yo by century is about ten inches long with the paper coil about five inches that can reach out to six feet or so depending on the looseness of the paper and the mastering of the force.
I find that upon taking the rubber band off the toy that keeps the coil bound some counter-clockwise motion of the coil helps to loosen it up therefore allowing it to stretch forward with the flick of the wrist. There has to be just the right balance of flow to get the most control and reach of the CYY. This is a toy that kids seven and older can learn to use. Younger children don't seem to have the hand/eye ccoordination needed to make the toy flick as it should and generally bend the paper to useless shape before they understand the motion to make it work.
I happen to be pretty good with it and can knock an apple off a persons head from six feet. OK, not true but I certainly can hit it.
These are fun to use and can be used to touch a person or thing at the distance of six/seven feet. It's a fun motion and it's one of those things that can keep me playing with it for a while.
These really don't have much of a long life. Once they start to get a bit too loose for proper use it loses its play factor. It just won't return wit the same feel. The cheap cost however makes them easily replaceable but the fact is, most kids put them down after a few minutes play unless they really get good at it.
These are very inexpensive and are good to introduce to kids to build up hand/eye coordination for the fun factor.
