| leonawong's Full Review: Chau Chow |
There are three Chau Chow restaurants in Chinatown: Chau Chow, Grand Chau Chow, and Chau Chow City. Chau Chow is the original restaurant. Grand Chau Chow came next, and the newest member of the Chau Chow chain is Chau Chow City. Of the three, Chau Chow City is my favorite.
For dim sum, Chau Chow City is one of the best restaurants in Chinatown. (For an overview of dim sum, please see my review on China Pearl.) If you are new to dim sum, Chau Chow City is a good place to start. The atmosphere, crowds, service, and pace are less intimidating than China Pearl (my favorite for dim sum). Plus, Chau Chow City offers a good selection and is more English language friendly. For food, I recommend the har-gow (steamed shrimp dumplings), cha soo bao (barbecue pork buns), and pi goot (pork spare ribs). The food is comparable to China Pearl, but the variety is not as good. China Pearl also lets you choose what kind of tea you want. Chau Chow City only offers the house tea. So, if you're looking for service and an easier dim sum experience, I recommend Chau Chow City. If you're looking for great food and can deal with not so great service, I recommend China Pearl.
Besides dim sum, Chau Chow City is one of my favorite restaurants in Chinatown. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the wait staff is attentive by Chinatown standards. One big plus is parking! Chau Chow City validates and pays for parking for the lot next door after 6pm. Parking in Chinatown can be a big pain depending on when you go. So, this is a big convenience. Since the restaurant is spacious, there's hardly ever a wait to get a table (unless the restaurant has been booked for a function). For food, I recommend the fried spicy squid, seafood fried noodles, and shrimp stuffed tofu. If you have a large group of people, get the steamed whole fish. The fish is yummy (just like my mom makes), and it's great to share. The Chau Chow chain is known for their seafood, and I usually go all seafood with my meals there. If you're not a seafood fan, they also offer a good selection of other food. I recommend the pepper beef. Try not to get trapped into the Americanized food. They offer a lot that caters to everyone. However, why not order the authentic stuff since you're in Chinatown?
