Pros: Wouldn't satisfy a tech hiker, but really wasn't meant to!
Cons: Excellent everyday bag for students and teachers

| charlieriley's Full Review: Classic Big Student |
I resisted buying this bag because it's ubiquitous on the University of Pittsburgh campus, where I work -- every student who doesn't carry an LL Bean carries the Jansport Big Student. However, the bag did have several features I wanted, including two main compartments, a padded back, and a little zippered slash pocket over the bigger, standard outside pockets for change, inhaler, altoids, whatever I needed to get to quickly. When I wanted a bag with a Pitt logo on it to carry at an academic conference a couple of months ago, I found a forest green Big Student, with the Pitt Panther, on sale -- so I caved.
I am very, very happy with this pack, and now understand why every other student on campus carries one. The capacity is excellent, the padding on the back is just right without being stiff (as on some tech packs), and the features are just what I needed. I can (and have) carried in this bag: four full two-liter bottles of pop, a freshman seminar textbook and two classes' worth of homework, a novel to read at lunch, lunch itself, a light jacket and all the usual personal stuff, at the same time, without pulling out a seam or straining my back.
Unlike some other daypacks, the storm flaps over the zippers are sized well -- I have yet to have to fumble for the zipper pull or get the teeth caught in the flap.
The straps on the bag are standard, padded, straight straps (might not work for people who prefer curved/formed straps), and the padded back is the usual boring standard black (I hate that -- blow an extra 50 cents, Jansport, and match the back to the front!). There is also no water bottle pocket, which would have been a nice addition, but isn't totally necessary.
I like my Big Student so much that I now use it for my everday bag. It really takes the load off a teacher's back.
