cmaw63's Full Review: Coby TF-DVD7005 7 in. Portable DVD Player
Part of what attracted me to DirecTV as opposed to Dish Satellite was a promotion that stated I would receive a "free portable dvd player". I wasn't expecting much out of a free dvd player, but when it arrived I eagerly tore into the package. Inside was the Coby TF-DVD7005 Portable DVD Player with Screen.
Low Expectations?
Boy, was I wrong! The Coby Portable DVD Player was more than I could have hoped for. It had everything, except a dvd, to get started. Included in the box: bud earphones, AC/DC adapter, DC car adapter, dvd player battery, remote and 2 AAA batteries for the remote. The instructions were clear and simple to follow to get started.
Following the instructions I attached the battery to the dvd player then plugged the player into an outlet with the AC/DC adapter. Instructions state to allow a 4 hour charge for a full battery. There is a red/green indicator light on the battery to let you know when it's finished charging. (Red=still charging / green=charged) I fell asleep so mine got a 7 hour charge it's first time out.
Wanting to see how long the battery would last, I pulled out one of my longest playing DVDs. The movie ran for 2 hours and 4 minutes without a problem from the dvd player. I started the movie again to see how much longer the battery would last. Finally, at 2 hours and 45 minutes the battery gave out. I was impressed. It was long enough to watch any movie I was interested in. If the player is closed during operation it will shut off the LCD screen to save power.
What impresses me the most about this Coby Portable DVD Player is the picture quality. The 7 inch (16:9 ratio) screen has a clearer picture than my 32" television. I had thought with the small screen things might look "squished". Everything is proportionate and well defined. I was even able to see the skin problem of a teenage star in the movie I watched. I wouldn't recommend watching a movie that closely, but I wanted to know how detailed the picture was.
Pushing the LCD Mode button, found next to where you insert the dvd, will allow you to adjust brightness, contrast and color. You can, also, adjust screen dimension from 16:9 to 4:3. (Widescreen to Normal) I will recommend the 16:9 widescreen to make the most of the 7 inch area. Under the LCD Mode button you'll find the Display button that will show the time and status information. The Play button will play, pause and resume the dvd. Stop when pressed once will stop the disk at that spot. Pressed twice it will return you to the beginning of the dvd.
Fast forward/Backward are on the same large button. Right for forward and backward is on the left. You can increase the the speed of each X2, X4, X8, X16 and X32. You need to push the button repeatedly until you reach the speed you want to use. Pressing play will resume normal playback.
On/off, volume, video input/output and the headphone jack are on the right side of the player. The bud earphones included with the Coby Portable DVD Player have great stereo sound. Too bad they don't fit my ears. They are too large to fit in my ears correctly, not giving me the quality sound they are capable of unless I hold them in place. Eventually, my ears started hurting, so I took them off and listened with the two speakers in the player. The sound coming directly from the dvd player isn't as nice as what the earphones provided, but less painful. They had a slight tinny quality to them, but were adequate for listening.
The Remote
The "credit card" remote takes 2 AAA batteries for operation. It has the same functions as above, plus a few more. Slow allows you to play the movie in slow motion. Available speeds are X 1/2, X 1/4, X 1/8, X 1/16 and X 1/32. There are directional arrows to highlight menu items, with an enter button in the center of them to choose the desired function. A Numeric Key Pad lets you go to a dvd chapter or a cd track. Simply put in the correct number and press enter. Mute pushed once will turn the sound off, pressed again sound will resume. I had fun with the Zoom button. It allowed me to zoom in at X2 and X4 while the movie was playing or paused. Pressed a third time the zoom will take you back to normal screen. The Search function will allow you to find what you're looking for by title/chapter or by time.
This Coby Portable DVD Player, also, has 8 levels of parental control. Level 8 is suitable for adults only. A 4 digit code is needed to lock/unlock this function. There is a password function as well. When first used you will input 8888, then input your personal 4 digit code and verify it.
What Else Does It Do?
This little machine will play dvd, cd, cd-r and cd-rw disks. You can view your photos, home video and music cd's with this hot little item. Simply burn a cd-r or rw on your computer and you'll be able to watch/listen to it where ever you go.
It has an anti-skip feature that works well. I carried it around the house picking it up and setting it down without a skip in play.
Your regular dvd player give out? Not a problem with the video input and output jacks you can hook up the Coby Portable Dvd Player to your tv and watch your movies.
Finally...
I love the Coby TF-DVD7005 Portable DVD Player with Screen. I've been using it for a little over a week now and what I thought would be a vacation or camping toy has turned into a nightly movie fest for me. My husband enjoys his shows on the main TV in the house, while I sit next to him and enjoy my movies. With the earphones, not the ones that came with this player, I don't disturb his viewing, but we're still together instead of in seperate rooms watching what we want. As I stated earlier I got this in a promotion, but have found it online for approximately $80 to $100. I will be buying the Coby TF-DVD7005 Portable DVD Player with Screen to give as gifts to family and friends!
