This represents a great buy (I'm using one right now). What can you say? All of the software I installed but one (an old obscure program) work at blazing speed. Display is clear and easy on the eyes. DVD/RW plays DVD's well, but additional software is need for full CD burning capabilities (I use Nero). Keyboard and touch pad have a good feel.
It has everything that you would need for current peripherals. The lack of a serial port is more of an issue for legacy products. No microphone was a needless and unexpected (I called support to find out why it didn't work) omission especially for a machine directed at the consumer market. Nonetheless a mike input is readily available.
The only support call was answered in about 5 minutes. Suggest you buy the extended warranty from Compaq that is better and cheaper than from third parties. Those wanting to upgrade to 384M will have an unexpected surprise - the only slot has a 128M card in it. To get to 384M you must remove the 128M card and replace it with a 256M card. This costs about $50 more than it would had the slot been open.
Although this model has been out for a few months, it still represents an excellent value.
