| javajoop's Full Review: Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof Dry Lotion |
I read in the paper today, September 16, as proclaimed by the United Nations Environmental Programme, is International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Our earth's protective barrier from ultraviolet radiation is slowly depleting, allowing harmful rays to penetrate through the atmosphere and many governments are urging the public to mitigate corrosive products like refrigerant. Care must be taken also not to be overly exposed to the sun's rays for fear of contracting melanoma or skin cancer. Sunscreens like Coppertone Sport Ultra Sweatproof Dry Lotion SPF 30 is a good defense to start with.
Coppertone's Sport line is geared for those with active lifestyles involved in watersports, hiking, field sports, winter skiing and the like. Started back five years ago, I like the plastic packaging which allows easy application and designed with slippery fingers in mind.
The lotion offers the following:
· Waterproof and Ultra-sweatproof
· Ultra-dry formula allows for no-slip grip
· Oil free
· UVA/UVB protection
· Available in 4 oz. and 8 oz. sizes
· Choice of SPF (sun protection factor) 15, 30 or 50
My choice came in from one of Schering-Plough's partners, Dr. Scholls, to try Coppertone new Sport sunscreen lotion in a form of a coupon. Previously, I didn't give a hoot about sunscreen. My skin fairly darkens on its own in the summer, however, I began to sunburn easily recently - especially on my head and shoulders. Then, I began using the product more frequently with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15-30.
At the beach, I'd liberally applied the mildly fragrant lotion on my forehead, face, shoulders and any where the skin is exposed. The lotion's color starts out white but once on the skin, disappears and dries immediately. More or less I'd use about four ounces per visit. I buy the 8 ounce version so I'd go through one about every other weekend. If I have a party of two or more, It's about two bottles an afternoon.
Recent reports urges that once you apply sunscreen, preferable 30 minutes before you go out, you must reapply every hour or upon vigorous activity like swimming or volleyball or you lose its efficacy. I took up water skiing and noticed that the lotion didn't hold up well in protection for obvious reasons. It's questionable on what the term, "waterproof" means when the main ingredient is water. Coppertone web page didn't elaborate.
As an experiment, I did one arm with protection versus the other arm without. Within twenty minutes under clouded skies in July, I began to turn red upon the unprotected limb. Yes, UV does penetrate clouds. Proof that Coppertone's Sport lotion is working.
In the future, I'll try different sunscreens to see their performance and keep you aware. What ever you do on a sunny and even cloudy day, get protection.
