I'm very pleased with this tractor.
It wasn't listed in any catalog at the Sears stores. The salesman brought it to my attention based on the automatic transmission version #27242 in the catalog. I like the color and it is the only model of the LT-1000 or the LTX-1000 series that includes the electric PTO, #27241 & #27242. You will have to go into Garden Tractors to get this option now.
The electric PTO is a simple electric clutch that engages the deck blades. It is expected to add life to the belt system since the manual PTO requires the owner to physically lift a stick shift into place, stretching the belt system to add tension on the pulleys that rotate the blades.
This Kohler 18 HP engine is 492cc, differentiating it from the 490cc 17 HP motor. The engine is relatively quite and pretty much vibration free. It was introduced in July 2000 but is no longer produced. Kohler is putting their efforts into the V-2 series, 18-26 HP. It has a pressurized oil system with automotive oil filter and hydraulic OHV's. Definitely low maintenance and a long life are expected!
The oil filter and drain are unobstructed and easily accessible. A clear drain tube is supplied for oil changes.
The body feels solid and comes with a cast iron front end that I believe will take a lot of punishment when hitting hidden ruts, where a formed steel front end might buckle or bend under stress.
The back tires are huge, 10 inches wide. Plenty of footing to distribute its 521 lbs.
The transmission has 6 gears forward, 1 reverse. At top speed 5.5 mph, I was able to go through 4 inch high grass, in mulching mode, without leaving clumps of grass behind me. What a time saver!!! I think you need those 18 horses to accomplish these mulching tasks.
The Desert Gold color finish distinguishes this tractor from the dull green and gaudy red or yellow riders I see in the neighborhood. It's also a good color for sun heat deflection.
The best part in acquiring this tractor was the price I paid for it.
Retail was $1749.00 minus $350.00 sale minus $140.00(10%) sears card minus $10.00 coupon provided by salesman.
Total Cost = $1249.00 and no PA sales tax, where I bought it, because the salesman transferred the transaction, electronically, to a Delaware Sears store where I then picked it up!!!
Total savings including no tax = $578.00
Purchased 03/10/2002
