| Freak369's Full Review: Crayola 16 Washable Crayons |
Recently I had the joy of babysitting my next door neighbors daughter for a few days. After having nothing but boys in the house I was looking forward to have a kid around that appreciated the joys of coloring books, Nick Jr. and afternoon naps. Ive watched Annabelle several times and she always expressed an interest in drawing, coloring and creating little works of art the downside is that she is only two and a half and in her fevered efforts to create the perfect brown puppy or bright yellow sun, she tends to forget where the paper ends and where the table begins. Knowing full and well her love of crayons I picked up several packs of the Crayola Washables so I wouldnt have to spend the better part of an hour getting the kitchen table clean.
Crayola 16 Count Washable Crayons
I was more than a little curious to see if the colors of the Washable crayons would be the same as the regular ones. I thought that maybe the colors would be less vibrant or possibly flake a little more than the normal ones but Im happy to say that these were ever bit as pleasant to use as the standard Crayola crayons. The word washable appears on each of the crayons so youll be able to tell them apart from the non-washable ones in case they get mixed up. These come packaged in the usual cardboard box so expect it to be trashed within a few weeks if you have a kid that loves to color.
Like almost all the other Crayola products, these are non-toxic so you wont have to worry about little kids taking a nibble from them and getting sick. This also goes for those kids that must peel the paper label off the crayon in order to use them. You wont have to worry about any chemicals or harmful products getting on their hands. This is just one of the many reasons I come back to the Crayola line of product time and time again.
The Washable Factor
These crayons will clean up off of most surfaces with little effort. Annabelle went a little crazy on the wooden kitchen table and with a warm sponge her scribbles were easily cleaned up. Not wanting to tell her to color on the walls then explain to her that this is a one time thing I tried these out around the house to see how easy or hard different surfaces were to clean. Much as I expected, anything with a texture to it was harder to get clean textured floor tiles, bathroom wall tile, unstained wood [this is a big no-no] and the refrigerator door. Surfaces that were a breeze mirrors, glass, smooth surfaces, counter tops and anything plastic. On the box there are instructions basically use soap and water with a sponge to remove the crayons from a surface. There are also instructions for getting the crayon off of clothing but luckily I didnt need to tackle that problem. In case you do wash the clothes in warm or hot water and you should be able to get the coloring out of the clothing. One warning that Ive never seen before is about melted crayons causing permanent stains on clothing and check pockets for crayons before placing clothes in dryer I never thought about what a mess that would be
Colors
You get a nice assortment of colors in this pack, more than enough to entertain a child for an hour or so. The colors include: yellow orange, red, white, blue, violet, brown, red orange, blue violet, yellow, orange, yellow green, blue green, red violet, black, green and carnation pink. There are a lot of different blended colors like the red orange, orange red and blue green so your child will have plenty of options available when working on their next masterpiece. I was a little worried that shed get bored with only 16 colors but the hours flew by and she was still having a great time with them.
Value
I picked these up at Wal-Mart for $1.09 but around the start of the school season you will be able to catch these on sale for about .75 cents [or less]. Considering these are washable and come in a lot of great colors, this is a pretty good deal for the enthusiastic artists that havent yet mastered coloring between the lines or staying on the paper. If you have a young child that is just getting into coloring or even scribbling Id suggest checking out the chunky style or jumbo Crayola Washable crayons since they will hold up to a bit more use and abuse and seem to be a little easier for them to hold on to and use.
The Bottom Line
Overall I am pretty impressed with the colors in this pack, how easily they can be cleaned up and the price. The Crayola name is one that I have grown to depend on for high quality products with great prices. There isnt an age recommendation on the package but Id have to say that these would be suitable for kids three and older. Annabelle really loved these and had a ball drawing different animals [at least I think they were animals], practicing her letters and numbers and coloring pretty much anything that wasnt moving.
