| Freak369's Full Review: Crayola Halloween Crayon Treat Pack |
With Halloween right around the corner I've started to rethink the whole passing out candy ritual. Sure I'll still have little goodie bags for all the little monsters, creatures and goonies that arrive on my doorstep but this year Ill be offering something a little different - Crayola Halloween Treat Packs! Ill offer the little ghouls and boys their choice and Im sure Ill end up with a majority of them picking the candy but at least I tried to offer a substitute.
Hey Freak, Whats In The Treat Pack?
Hey, Im glad you asked! The Crayola Halloween Treat Pack youll find three very cool crayons in three spooky colors Glowing Eyes Yellow, Monster Green and Midnight Gloom [black]. The three crayons are the same exact size and shape as regular Crayola crayons but these are three frightfully fun colors created just for the Halloween season.
The three crayons come packaged in a small plastic bag with all the usual Crayola information printed on it [non-toxic, warnings etc]. These make great substitutes to candy and kids really seem to enjoy getting these over receiving 30 Fun Sized Snickers. Last year I made small treat bags for the children that frequent my house on a daily basis. Most of their parents were cringing at the thought of the amount of candy they would be bringing home so I turned the tables on them and added gift certificates, Crayola crayons, small coloring books and a small portion of candy. I wish I would have seen the Crayola Halloween Crayon Packs because they would have made a great addition to the treat sacks. Alas, I didnt come across them until a few days after Halloween when they were on sale.
In the past Crayola have also offered a two pack of Halloween themed crayons of which my personal favorite was the black and silver assortment. I picked these up a few days after Halloween at JoAnne Fabrics for .50 cents a bag and used them for a variety of things. Seeing as how I picked up a lot of bags, chances are they too will be added to Halloween treat bags this year in addition to the newest Crayola Halloween treat assortment.
Things To Know
Make sure that the younger trick-or-treaters know that these arent candy. Sure that seems simple enough for most people to follow but sugar crazed wee people tend to disregard the fact that not everything placed in the treat bag is edible. Even though they are non-toxic, I doubt any parent wants to deal with the end result of colorful crayon ingestion.
If you are going to purchase these after the Halloween season for the following year, make sure you store them in a cool, dry place to avoid having them melt. Yes, I speak from personal experience. One of the bags I purchased last year ended up turning into what can only be called a modern day masterpiece when it was wasnt stored with the other bags in the basement closet.
These also make great travel packs to take along on last minute trips! Just because they are Halloween colors doesnt mean that they cant be used year round. These are the perfect little packs to keep in an activity bag that can be grabbed as you head out the door. Combine these with some blank tablets, markers and stencils and you have enough ammunition to keep kids busy for at least 15 minutes.
If you dont have a lot of trick-or-treaters, consider making up small gift bags that consist of non-candy items. When the back to school season ends a lot of products are put on clearance which means you can stock up on fun items like markers, sketch pads, stencils, stampers and activity books. For less than a few dollars you can stencil paper lunch bags, toss in the goodies and hand out a sugarless treat that will last a lot longer than a candy bar!
Where to Purchase
If you cant find these are your local Wal-Mart or Target, you can order these directly from Crayola. Orders need to be placed by October 18, 2002 in order to receive them before Halloween and for a limited time you can receive a 15% discount on your first order through the Crayola Store. I found them locally for $3.99 for the 20 count bag however Crayola sells them for $4.99. Still, if this is something that seems interesting to you whats an extra dollar?
The Bottom Line
With so many strange people roaming the streets and the ever present possibility of candy tampering, the Crayola Halloween Treat Pack is a great alternative. As strange as it may seem, there are some kids that just dont like candy or chocolate so for them I am sure this product would be a much welcomed change to the usual array of sweet treats they normally receive.
One of my fondest memories of childhood was an old lady that lived alone in a rather scary looking house. She never had visitors and was usually referred to as the crazy lady. One day I got up the courage to knock on her door and ask her if I could pick a few wildflowers from her lawn and much to my surprise, she wasnt the insane, axe wielding loon everyone had built her up to be. We became friends and that Halloween she handed me a brown paper bag filled with a lot of non-candy treats. Even after all these years and all the wonderful and creative things Ive been given her little treat bag is the one that I remember the most.
Wishing you a safe and spook-tacular Halloween
