| onextruexhope's Full Review: Creative Technology PD1001 Web Cam |
I figured a while ago I needed a webcam. I really don't know what compelled me to buy one, but taking pictures on my digital camera and then hooking it up to the computer to upload was quite annoying if I just wanted to take one picture here or there in my house. I assume I also bought the webcam so that I could use netmeeting to talk to friends I haven't seen in a long time, and so on.
Anyways, I knew I wanted something cheap that was reliable and did the job. This is why i settled on the Creative Labs WebCam (USB). First off, the price was unbeatable. I believe I only paid 25 dollars for this thing. I didn't need a web cam to do anything spectacular-so when I read the features, they suited my needs. First off, there's a little snapshot button on the top of the camera which makes it easy to snap pictures without having to reach for the mouse and click. It's portable enough so that you can take it further from the computer. One feature that it has that's interesting is a monitor. You can actually set this computer up to "monitor" activity near your computer. It'll take a picture of anyone who comes near the computer, by setting off some sort of sensor which triggers the webcam. I don't know why anyone would need this really-but it's truly interesting to watch it work. One more nice thing it comes with: photo-editing software. Simple, but useful if you don't have your own. Oh and before I forget, this webcam comes with a 6' USB cable, which saved me the trouble of buying my own.
The installation for this webcam was quick and painless. As quick as I got it out of the box, that's how quick I got it up and running. Just so you know, the maxium still image resolution (as well as the maxium video resolution) is 352 x 288, Im assuming you'd expect that for the price more or less. It works on Windows 98, 2000, ME or XP. You obviously need a USB port, 100MB of hard disk space, CD-ROM drive, sound card and microphone, and internet access with instant messaging would be nice.
All in all, it's a decent camera for your buy. If you're looking for something simple and to the point and you don't need any fancy-schmancy options, this is the camera for you.
