| jido's Full Review: Creative Technology Sound Blaster® Live! Plat... |
I got my Sound Blaster Live x-gamer and I was expecting to get a State-of-the-art sound card. I can tell you I'm not dissapointed in any way. I once had an AWE 64 (which sadly got literally burned to death) and was very happy with it, and was stuck with a cheap and crappy yahama opl3 based sound card. Once I installed the x-gamer, I was introduced to a whole new level of sound. At that time I had a couple of cheap (again) speakers, but then I got a Creative SoundWorks FPS 1000 set and this card does wonders with it! With this upgrade, I also got environmental audio up and running. I must say I don't want to look back (I gave away my old sound card in case something ever happened to this one I wouldn't go back to that).
I didn't buy this card for the "x-gamer" part, it was only because I had to choose between it and the "live mp3" variation (as far as I know the only difference between them is the bundled software, which in the mp3 is an mp3 maker software, or so I was told), so I didn't get too excited about any of them... the bundled games are nice (it comes with Need for speed: High Stakes, Thief and Descent 3), and they were a welcome addition to my game collection. It also comes with Creative's LiveWare, which is a nice set of sound apps, but I almost never get to use most of them. The Configuration software is very nice, and also the effects you can put into the output are kind of fun to use once in a while.
So far so good. For me, a good Creative Sound Card has become a must-have. I just have to say that the SB Live X-Gamer has been one of my best buys in a long time.
