BUILD QUALITY
The Crosman 760 feels like absolute crap! Its hard to even believe it is an air rifle. I mean it. The gun weighs just a little more than 2 and a half pounds. There are NERF foam rocket launchers that weigh more than that. Super Soakers weight more than that.
The fake wood looking plastic stock/handle aren’t even shaped or molded that nicely. It looks as if whoever sculpted it went out to lunch halfway through and never came back. The front pump/grip looks like isn’t even completed. Its actually possible to pinch your finger if you don’t take care not to let one get too close to the moving metal parts. Sometimes, the front grip/pump will even open up if you have it on your shoulder requiring you to close it again – which by the way pumps the gun – filling it with a small amount of air even if you didn’t want to.
The front glo-sight on some models was added in late in the product’s life and is relatively good quality, while the rear sights are as cheap as they come. I never even bothered firing this gun with the metal sights – I went right for a 4X15 Tasco scope. Everything about this gun feels unfinished with the exception of the receiver which has a nifty BB reservoir that allows you to fill the stock with BB’s and then load them one at a time. By simply cocking the gun.
Pellets can be loaded into a 5-shot clip which must still be cocked to force a single round into the gun’s breech. It is recommended that you take out all BB’s first to ensure none of them make their way into the breech with a pellet.
AMMO
This gun is only sold in .177caliber (4.5mm) which is my favorite caliber. These .177 cal BB’s and pellets are cheap to purchase and easy to find. Some stores don’t stock .22 cal ammo anymore. This gun’s clip specifically accepts wadcutters and you are advised not to use hunting (pointed) pellets.
ACCURACY and POWER Considering how much I hated this guns’s build quality, you might be led to believe it’s a piece of crap not worth the money. On the contrary… this cheaply made, plastic feeling, toy-like item happens to be one of the deadliest rifles I’ve used.
With just 10 pumps, the gun rockets pellets out towards pests at a very conservative 625 Feet Per Second. This is actually not a lot of power for longer range shots but in the short range (up to 100 feet) this happens to be very advantageous. Pellets launched at these velocities pierce the skin of small game and do not penetrate through them. Guns like my own Winchester 800 or the Crosman Tac 77 will “icepick” through a rat like a needle rather than delivering their kinetic energy to the body and expanding inside the wound cavity. Larger wounds are produced at low velocities and these cause the animal to bleed out quicker which is much more humane. Higher powered rifles such as the Gamo Hunter (1250FPS) are just as deadly but you are supposed to use them on larger game with thicker hides (prairie dogs, gophers, rats, possums, etc)
This gun also happens to be deadly accurate at short ranges. Below 50 feet it is almost pinpoint accurate once it is sighted in. Farther out, it starts losing some accuracy, but it still has a high level of precision. Its perfect for bird hunting in the back yard. Even better for shooting cans and glass bottles.
The 4lb trigger pull is lighter than the trigger pull of many air pistols making individual pulls effortless and smooth. I liked the targeting speed I was able to acquire but due to its light mass, I had to press it into my arm slightly more than larger heavier guns to keep it steady. The ultralight body and small size make it perfect for teaching gun safety to a young shooter, but, because it’s muzzle energy is relatively high, there is naturally the danger of eye injury or possible death. Care must be taken to ensure youth shooters properly use the safety and ensure their fingers don’t get jammed when they try to pump it 10 times quickly. With an overall length of 34” and a barrel length of 16 and a half inches, its ultra portable and fits in most rifle bags (if not all of them). The dovetail rails accept any 3/8 mount and works best with a 4x15 scope. I tried ZOOM scopes but they were much harder to zero-in. I also wasn’t pleased by the gun’s performance with a mounted laser unless you are shooting at stationary cans and bottles.
OVER ALL
The 760 reminds me of the real AK-47 “Military” rifle. Its powerful, deadly and accurate at short ranges but it feels like cheap junk when compared to the more expensive guns. In fact, like an AK, this gun is relatively easy to maintain since its stock is plastic. A regular barrel cleaner and pengunoil will keep the 760 working accurately for a very long time.
I think Crosman should rebuild this rifle with a real wood stock, or at least increase the quality of the materials and fix the front pump/grip to make it less hazardous. At just $40 ~ $50, its dirt cheap and deceptively powerful.
