Hey Culligan Man! My water smells like rotten eggs and is coming out of the faucet black looking - do you have a water conditioner to take care of this?
Sounds like the Fountain of Youth water in St. Augustine? Absolutely! Hydrogen sulfide, known as sulfur. Sulfur causes the "rotten egg" smell in water and has black particles in it that come out of the faucet. Nasty. No other way to describe it but Nasty! There is nothing worse than trying to take a bath, to get clean, and the water looks dirtier than you are!
First, to take care of our water problem, we used an aerator that sprayed the water into a holding tank. By spraying the water, the sulfur was removed, and the water was much better. But it was a continual problem trying to keep the spray heads clean and not clogged with particles of sulfur. About twice a year my husband would clean the holding tank with bleach and normally about once a month I would pour about a cup of bleach into the holding tank to take care of any build-up of sulfur. This method worked somewhat, but it definitely wasn't wonderful.
Finally Culligan developed a water conditioning filter system, called the Super S. The Culligan Super S is a patented filtration process that removes hydrogen sulfide from water, thus eliminating the "rotten egg" smell, plus as an added benefit it also removes iron from the water. This system is designed to filter water for the entire house Now we are not talking cheap - the unit (five years ago) cost $2000.
The unit isn't very big and fits into my "pump house" easily. The Super S is set on a timer so that it will backwash itself two nights a week to remove sulfur buildup from the filter, by using plain water. Then once a week, the system cleans itself by using bleach, regular household bleach. I simply place the tube that is attached to the unit into the jug of bleach and leave. The regeneration begins in the middle of the night. It drains the water from the unit, sucks the bleach into the unit and completely cleans the filter of sulfur and iron build- up. If I use more water than normal during a week, I can also manually start the regeneration to clean the filter again. Very easy. All I have to do is hook up a jug of bleach to the unit every Friday (this is the night we selected to clean the unit.) If I forget, about Wednesday of the following week, someone will ask if I hooked up the bleach!
I have had this unit about five years. When Culligan came to set it up, they tested the water to get certain ratings that they used for the settings. Since that time, I have only had two service calls, plus I have them completely clean the unit about once a year. They are always very pleasant on the phone and I have never had a problem. Since my unit is in an outside building, I don't even have to take off from work for the service call - we just leave notes to each other!
Culligan markets this unit as A super solution to some very messy problems and nasty water definitely falls into this category! Does your water come out of the faucet black? Does it smell nasty with a rotten egg smell? You need a super solution - Culligan Super S Iron and Sulfur Filter!
