No muss or fuss when I use my Pampered Chef Smooth-Edge Can Opener

In November of 2001, I had the opportunity to attend a meeting with about 20 consultants for the Pampered Chef, and learn more about the products, as well as see a demonstrations on many of the various products. All the consultants were asked to come up with a product they found difficult to use and/or sell. One person named this product, the Smooth-Edge Can Opener, and we proceded to see an impromptu demonstration about this product. At the time, I had never seen it before and had no idea about it save what I had read in the catalogue. What a great opportunity for me!
Shortly after this meeting, my mom held a Kitchen Show. I had been telling her all about what I had learned, and how much I wanted to earn one of these Can Openers. As a gift, my mom used her hostess points to order 2 of them - one for her and one for me! What a great mom!
I brought it home, started using it, and within a few days I packed up my electric can opener and said bye-bye! I donated it to the yard sale the MOMS Club was having, and never looked back. I can safely say that I will never use another can opener again, now that I have this one!
What are the features? What are the benefits?

Tempered Steel Cutting Wheel: This is a sharp blade, but not one that you can easily touch. Do be sure to keep this away from children! This wheel cuts the lid rim in half, leaving the upper half with the lid, and the lower half with the can. This gives a smooth rounded edge, which will not cut you or land the lid into the food. No muss, no fuss, no metal shavings or nasty bacteria from the top of the lid going into your food!
Lid Gripper: This grabs a hold of the lid of the can, and you can lift it - SLOWLY - up and away from the can. This way, hands never have to touch the food. Remember - SLOWLY is important! A fellow consultant was scared of this product after going too fast and spraying the contents of a can all over the floor, carpet, and guests during a live kitchen demonstration! Oops!
Plastic Handle: This handle is made to be durable and break-resistant. It has been fine for me, and cleans easily also.
Large Turning Knob: This is made to be very easy to turn, as well as comfortable. I have had zero problems with it, and think that the size is perfect for easy use. Even my mother that has little to no strength in her hands found it easy to turn and use.
But wait, there is more uses!: I haven't done this yet, but you can use the lid gripper to pry aluminum lids off coffee, cocoa or tea cans. Also, you can remove metal caps off soda or juice bottles with the bottle opener which is on the opposite side from the lid gripper.
Two-year Guarantee: Yes, if anything happens within two years of purchase, this product will be repaired or replaced.
Use and Care Information Card: The fun thing with all Pampered Chef products is the use and care information that comes with every single product. Not only will you learn how to take care of your product, but each card has a recipe on it! Even this one! This one comes with the recipe for Hearty Six-Can Chili.
Product Dimensions: The Smooth-Edge Can Opener is 7 1/2" in length and about 2 1/2" in height. The large turning knob is 3" in length.
This product is exclusively made for Pampered Chef, but I know that there are knock-offs out there. Several people have told me about using them, and having these knock-offs break quickly or just not work.
So how do I use it?
Always wash all products prior to your first use. In this case, wash it by hand in warm, soapy water. Dry immeditately.
To use it, you open the handles and place it over the top of a can so the rim of the lid is positioned between the cutting blade and the gear-shaped wheel. The can opener will be perpendicular to the can. There is a magnet that will help guide you also. Next, squeeze the handles together until the can is firmly held in place. Once you get it correctly on, you will feel more resistance when you squeeze the handles together than if you were squeezing them together with nothing there.
Once you have it on, turn the large turning knob in a clockwise directoin from right to left. The can will move when you are turning the knob. You will feel the tension lesson and something like a bump when you have made a complete rotation around the can. Set the can down, and separate the handles of the can opener. This will release the can and allow you to remove the lid. To do that, look for a set of teeth to the left of the large turning knob when the handles are together. Those teeth are the lid gripper. Open the handles again, and place the bottom set of teeth grippers against the can, and close the handles so that the rim of the lid is within the teeth. SLOWLY lift up and away at the same time, so as not to turn the can's contents into a projectile.
And that is it! Now, say you are going to use this on pet food, and you do not give it all at once - you would need to put a lid on it to save it until later so that it stays fresh and does not stink up your fridge, right? Never fear - the lid is here! Yes, you can place the lid right back onto of it, and have a tight fit. Sure it will pop right off when you go to remove it, and it is much better than a fridge full of food that smells like dog food!

The metal cutting blade is SHARP and can hurt you!
Keep this and all cutting instruments away from children and out of their reach!
Store this product safely when you are not using it
Read and follow all use and care directions carefully before you first use it
If you do this, I know it will be a great product for you!
My Recommendation
I can not tell you how many bad reviews I have read about can openers just in 2 months time. It is astounding how many bad ones there are out there. Not only that, but how unsafe many of them are. I highly recommend this for every kitchen, for college students, families, bachelors, bachelorettes, singles, retirees, aliens, anyone! I think anywhere that you go that you need to open a can of anything, this product should be there! I am proud to say that it is the only can opener I will use and the last one I will ever own. I hope that you would be willing to try it at a kitchen show near you, and maybe, just maybe, bring your own one into your home!
