| tommiles's Full Review: Dake Annotated Reference Bible : Indexed Books |
I love Bibles, I have quite a few, and use them all. I have some favorites though and one of my favorites is Dake's Annotated Reference Bible. I have the Old & New Testaments Compact Edition with concordance and Red letters. Over 2000 pages of wonderful study aids.
The Dake Bible was compiled over a period of more than 20 years of research by Finnis Jennings Dake. You will find over 30,000 commentary notes, nearly 10,000 outline references and 500,000 chain and cross references. Dake took painstaking effort to make sure his references, notes, and commentary expounded fully on the Word of God in a manner that would be helpful not confusing. You will find explanation of difficult passages, Greek and Hebrew words and phrases explained, history and customs of Biblical times discussed. Also you will find that Dake treats the allegories, parables, prophecy, types of symbols etc., with great detail and in a manner easily followed in roughly 200 pages of helps (preface, the Minor Prophets, Between the Testaments, Old Testament Questions, A Guide to Personal Work, A guide to Bible Reading, New Testament Commands, New Testament Promises, Bible Plagues, Summary of New Testament Prophecies, New Testament Questions, 370 Kinds of Sins Committed, complete Concordance and Cyclopedic Index, How to mark your Bible, and Bible chart adaptations) separate from the commentary and helps included with each book (notes and commentary also follow each book). The Bible is set in three columns - two of text and the other of comments and notes. It seems the desire and goal of Dake was to make the Word of God easily understood and I feel he did this well.
You can find the Dake Bible available in various sizes, the compact one that I have, a larger size or standard size and a large print. The Bible is available in hardback, bonded leather, and genuine leather and two colors - black, which I have and burgundy. You can buy yours with thumb indexing or you can buy the stick on tabs as I did. As I stated in the con section, the Bible is only available in the King James Version.
You can buy this Bible new for $39.00 up to $110.00. You can also find them used for prices ranging from $10.00 to $80.00. The nice thing about many used Bibles is that you also get the previous owners comments and notes in the margins -- sometimes of great value, sometimes not so great!
