| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Damon's |
Damons is a sports bar and grill that features lots of televisions, excellent food, and weekly trivia. This relatively young restaurant chain was founded by Irv Rossman, who opened the first Damons in Columbus, Ohio, in 1979. Today, Damons has more than 100 locations in 30 states, mostly in the eastern half of the country. There are also some international locations, in England, Panama, and Puerto Rico.
Menu Selection:
At Damons, you will find a good selection of food, and the portions are generous. Starting with the appetizers, you can choose from potato skins, chicken tenders, mozzerela sticks, popcorn shrimp, and Damons famous onion loaf. There is also a combination platter, with a little of each. Many of these appetizers are quite large and can easily serve as a meal all by themselves.
The sandwich menu contains most of my favorite food items at Damons. Just like with the appetizers, the sandwiches are large and very filling. Some of the options include Damons Southern Barbecue, All- American Cheeseburger, Prime Rib Dip, Country Herb Chicken, Blue Ribbon Barbecue Chicken, Chicken Parmesan, Texas Hickory Grilled Chicken, and Pacific Rim Chicken. Theres also my personal favorite, Damons Big Burger, which includes a half- pound beef patty, topped with pulled smoked pork. Its a very large, very tasty, and very filling sandwich. All of these platters include fries and a pickle. Be sure to bring your appetite, because these sandwich platters are all quite filling!
The food that Damons likes to brag most about is its barbecued ribs. There are numerous selections of ribs on the menu, and they have won many awards each year. Damons prepares its ribs by cooking them over an open flame, and then covering them in barbecue sauce. They are very good!
If you would like a full dinner, you can select between a New York Strip Steak, Sirloin Steak, Grilled Chicken Breast, or Chicken Tenders. Each dinner comes with garlic rolls, and your choice of two side dishes. Theres also a few combo meals to choose from, which combine barbecue ribs with your choice of either chicken tenders, chicken wings, or jumbo breaded shrimp.
Atmosphere:
This is probably the primary reason why people go to Damons! Each restaurant is divided into three sections: A dining area, a bar, and a more casual area with four big screen televisions. In the dining area, there are smaller screen televisions. Each table has a volume control, so that you can select which of the four television programs you want to listen to, and how much volume you prefer. The focus of the restaurant is the casual area. Even at the bar, its common for some of the seats to be built facing the casual area, with an open view of the big screen televisions.
If you like to play trivia, Damons has special trivia nights for your enjoyment. Damons is linked into the NTN network, which includes thousands of taverns and restaurants all over the country. As you answer the questions, you can look at the screen and see how your establishment ranks among all the other places and, if youre doing exceptionally well yourself, you can see how you rank compared to other individuals.
Service:
I have never had any problem with service at Damons. They frequently stop at your table, to see if you need anything, and they are always ready to bring you another beer or more complementary garlic rolls. The only slight problem that I have had, is when it gets overcrowded. If theres a major sporting event on television, or if its a Friday or Saturday night, you can expect a long wait, before you get seated.
Pricing:
Damons prices arent too bad, when you consider what you get for your money. A sandwich platter will cost you from $7 to $10 and a dinner will set you back $10 to $15. Beverages can add up, with a large 20oz beer selling for $3.50 (for domestic) or $4.50 to $5.00 for an import. Mixed drinks are priced between $4.00 and $7.00, which is comparable to most restaurants.
Bottom Line:
Damons is one of my favorite restaurants, and a prime location to hang out and watch sports. The food is excellent, and the service is friendly and quick. You might get stuck waiting in line to get seated, but its worth it. I enjoy everything about this restaurant, from the food, to the atmosphere, to the service. With only a little over 100 locations, Damons has plenty of room to grow and expand. If they continue to offer such top- notch quality as they do, I wouldnt be surprised if Damons becomes a household name. If you live close to one, pay Damons a visit. You wont be disappointed!
