dealseeker's Full Review: Davinci Monterey Changer
When I ordered this changing table from babystyle.com, it was my first (and maybe only) purchase of furniture over the internet. I was pretty hesitant to buy furniture I hadn't seen, but I got a really good deal on it, so I decided to go for it. I had been planning on not buying a changing table at all -- lots of friends said that using the bed, or the floor would work fine. I'm so glad I didn't listen to them.
Behind our boppy (nursing pillow), this changing table is our most used piece of baby equipment. When I'm out of town and have to change diapers on beds, the floor, etc., I miss it!
The monterey changing table is a nice looking addition to a baby's nursery. I was actually pretty worried when it arrived -- I thought my fears about purchasing furniture on the internet had all been realized. What I saw first when I opened the package was the particle board shelves. It's true -- they're not great quality. However, they are the "worst" part of the changing table, and they're still not bad. The rest of the changing table is very solid, and we haven't had any problems with the shelves. I was most worried about the top shelf, which needs to support the baby's weight, but it is supported by a metal brace and feels very sturdy once it's put together. The table also seems very stable and I am very comfortable using it. There is also a strap to use to keep the baby secure, though I wouldn't depend on it (or any strap) once the baby is moving much.
It took my husband and I about an hour to put the changing table together (the directions weren't great, but when was the last time you read good directions?)
A minor complaint: the changing pad that's included is pretty thin and it isn't a standard size -- so it's hard both to find a replacement pad that fits well (I gave up and decided the one that came with it would do) and a cover for the pad (most of the ones you find in baby stores don't fit well on it).
I should also say that we've spilled a lot of stuff on the shelves -- from baby oil to water, and it hasn't left any marks.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the quality for the money. Granted at its list price (about $110 at most on-line baby stores), it isn't cheap. But a lot of the changing tables we looked at were more like $200 and not much better quality. And the other comparably priced changing tables were cheap and rickety! We just recommended this changing table to my brother and sister-in-law, so that's about the best recommendation we could give it!
