I needed to reserve four rooms at a hotel in Hannibal, Missouri. I originally went with the Comfort Inn there. Due to a staff that wouldn't work with me on adjoining rooms and charges I decided to look around at the other hotels. When I phoned the Hannibal- Days Inn the employee there was more than accommodating.
Hannibal- Days Inn
We arrived in Hannibal at 11 a.m., too early to check in. The group of us did an hour tour of Hannibal, seeing some of the town. We passed a Travelodge and another hotel that looked...well...nasty. I was relieved when we arrived at the Days Inn. The exterior was clean and pleasant looking.
The lobby is small and unpretentious. Its one redeeming feature was the glass paned double doors leading to the breakfast area. The employee at the front desk had me leaving the lobby with card keys to all four rooms within a few minutes of me stating my name and that I had reservations. No identification required. The first thing that made me go "hmmmmmm".
After getting two of the rooms settled in I went to my room. I was having trouble getting either of my card keys to work. A man walked up to my door and said "here let me". Then proceeded to use a card key to open my door. I was stunned, but not voiceless. I demanded to know who he was and why he had a key to my room. He stated he was a maintenance man and left. The second thing that made me go "hmmmmm...what the...?". After entering my room I was initially pleased with it.
The room was large with a king size bed and a long dresser with a 27" TV sitting on it. A table with two chairs sat in front of the window and a small easy chair with a footstool was along a wall. A nightstand was on each side of the bed. Both had a lamp, one a radio alarm clock. There was a long counter area with a sink, cups, coffee, and a coffee maker. Next to the sink was the bathroom door. The small bathroom barely held the toilet and bathtub.
Everything seemed to be okay...until further inspection. The bed was comfortable until I settled in. In a few places I was able to feel the springs. It was a chore trying to stay in a place where I wouldn't be poked. One of the lamps was missing a light bulb. The arms of the easy chair were worn and dirty. The bath/shower area had moldy grout and the showerhead was sporting its fair share of mold. While reading some Days Inn material left on the table I noticed a satisfaction survey. It had already been filled out. It was dated 8/05. Ten days before I checked in. The previous guest noted the half inch gap between the bottom of the rooms exterior door and the floor. It had allowed crickets and other bugs in during their stay. Of course I investigated and found that it was true. I stuffed a towel in the gap in an effort to be bugless. It didn't work. I called one of the other rooms and had him look at his doorway. He too had the half inch gap. We couldn't change hotels at this time as one of our party wasn't feeling well and needed to lie down. We were stuck. All of the things that made me go "ewwwwwwwwwww".
Luckily, there were a few redeeming qualities. Our rooms were right next to the outdoor pool. The pool area was clean and had plenty of tables and chairs to rest on while drying off a bit after a swim. The temperature had climbed to 109 degrees fahrenheit during the day. The hotel was doing a good job of keeping fresh water pumping into the pool to keep it relatively cool. Of course after my swim I had to shower. I closed my eyes and tried to not touch any of the mold. I was pleasantly surprised at the force of the constant hot water during my shower. The third, and very important, plus was the room air conditioning. I was able to set the controls to keep it 68 degrees in my room. It was heaven after the long, extremely hot day. Finally, some things that made me go "ahhhhhhhhhh".
The next morning a fellow traveler called me and told me to look outside and check out my visitor. My first thought was that the maintenance man was back. He assured me it wasn't the maintenance guy...just look outside. I stepped out my door and didn't see anyone, except my fellow traveler. He told me to look up. Hanging on the wall above my window was a bat. I tried to look on the bright side. Maybe he was busy eating all the bugs trying to crawl under my door. One last thing that made me go "eeeek!".
Our group of nine went to the free breakfast offered by the hotel. Two types of cereal, oatmeal packets, bagels, bread ,and doughnuts were offered. Milk, apple juice, and orange juice were available. Nothing fantastic, but it got our day started.
Checkout was easy. I handed her all of the card keys, she handed me the receipts. I was gone within a minute. We paid a total of $278 (including tax) for four rooms. An average of $69.50 per room. There were two double queen rooms and two single king rooms.
The Hannibal- Days Inn got us through the night. With the other chain hotels in the area I wouldn't recommend staying there. Well, unless you like bugs and bats.
