| AliventiAsylum's Full Review: Delaney's Hole in the Wall |
One afternoon our way back home from up north, I was urged by a friend to stop at Delaney’s Hole in the Wall. It’s a popular place for the workers from some of the ski areas around these parts.
Delaney’s Hole in the Wall is easy to find. It’s right on Route 16 which is the main strip through the Mount Washington Valley, right by Memorial Hospital. It’s in a building which looks like an old house. The interior is reminiscent of an older home as well, with old beams and various rooms.
We often dine in the bar area when we stop in. The bar itself is small, but the room around it is pretty big with tables that have a good view of the wide-screen television on the far wall. They typically have on whatever sports are ongoing at the time for the area, such as the New England Patriots or Boston Red Sox games.
That is just the bar area, though. The main part of the restaurant is set off from that, so people who have a “thing” about taking their kids into bars needn’t worry. Personally it doesn’t bother me.
The menu at Delaney’s Hole in the Wall is really good with plenty to choose from. We’ve stopped in here for a couple of beers and appetizers and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The Handcut Onion Rings are really good and not very greasy. I’ve also had the Doin’ the Wings and although they aren’t as spicy as I usually like, they were tasty. The Potato Skins were also good. I’ve also had their New England Clam Chowder and French Onion Soup, both of which I liked.
For main dishes, one of the things Delaney’s Hole in the Wall features which is unique to the area is fresh sushi. I haven’t been with anyone who’s actually tasted that, but it’s pretty popular. If you’re looking for sushi in the Mount Washington Valley, this is pretty much the place to go for it.
They have a selection of salads, which I haven’t tried yet either, and a wide variety of sandwiches to choose from as well which is why this is a favorite place of many people in the mid-day. I usually choose a burger over a sandwich, although I have had the Texas Tornado (chicken breast with maple jalapeno bbq sauce, cheddar, bacon, lettuce, and tomato on garlic toast) and it was really impressive. My favorite to order here are the burgers which I think are delicious. My favorite is the Hickory Burger which has bacon, cheddar cheese, and bbq sauce.
There are a wide variety of pastas, steaks, and seafood available here as well. I think that Delaney’s Hole in the Wall has probably the largest menu in the Valley, or at least the largest I’ve come across so far. Really, there’s something here for everyone. I can’t imagine going here and not finding something one of my friends would like.
There’s a kids menu as well, featuring the staples of burgers, hot dog, fish and chips, grilled cheese, chicken fingers, and spaghetti. There’s no set dessert menu, but specials on the blackboard each day. I’ve never gone here and been hungry for dessert, so I can’t speak to how good they are.
The beer list at Delaney’s Hole in the Wall is pretty good and features such local offerings as Tuckerman’s Pale Ale and Woodstock Pig’s Ear Brown Ale. For those ski area workers, there is a drink I like called Blue Ice which is a shot of Rumplemize with Blue Curacao.
The service here has always been pretty good. Only one time in low-season did we have to wait for our check. The rest of the time they were spot on with taking our order, checking if we needed more drinks, clearing the table, and bringing the check. There is also entertainment during certain times of the year.
As I think about coming back into the Valley from Wildcat Mountain or other ski areas on the north end of the Valley, the place I would think to stop at would be Delaney’s Hole in the Wall. Whether you’re with a group of friends or a family returning from a day out, you can get a great meal here. It’s a nice, casual atmosphere while providing an extensive menu of good food and drink. What more could you ask for?
