"Perhaps the reason why I found these to be "lulls" is because one, I am a young black man at the time of this writing, so I already know "about that aspect of society..."

Actually your review of this book gives me much more information than I ever obtained by reading it myself. In light of this, I MIGHT check it out again.

I think the whole thing on the woman/tree lovemaking scene from the beginning of the book (interesting what we notice, as that scene was so much local color to me rather than pivotal in itself; must be something to do with our different sexualities, as you say in your review; gay people and straight people would respond to different things in this book) is one of Delany's frequent allusions to mythology. In this case the myth of Daphne, an aid to Artemis who was turned into a tree in order to escape Apollo's sexual advances.
