I have owned and hated many generations of these cards. I keep hoping they will get better, but they continue to disappoint me. Out of several dozens of colleagues, I only know of one that likes these things -- and he spends several hours mucking about with the drivers and dll files to make them work. I have one installed now in a windows 98 machine, which crashes every half hour -- suffice it to say, I don't use that one very much. I have another in a linux machine, which works well in character mode, but I cannot get X windows to go on it at all. I am sure it is a compatibility issue with some other component in the system -- but it is not worth my time to track the problem down. If other, less qualified manufacturers can make their cards work with my equipment, why can't Diamond -- which used to be one of the premier makers of video cards. I believe they are now resting on their laurels.
What do I recommend instead? Just about anything else. After running a network of several hundred computers, I can confidently say, "you can make these cards work, but why should you bother?"
Hint: they seem to work better with a generic super vga driver than they do with any of the manufacturer provided drivers.
