| jmailrecv's Full Review: Digisette DUO-64 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
The world is not short of good MP3 players. There are fat ones, thin ones, fast ones, slow ones; players with buttons, players with dials, players with free subscriptions and players with smiles. MP3 players are becoming commodities, like, say, hammers. They are simple and well understood and any company that wants to make a good one can. There isn't much use in getting a specific brand of either because the clones are just as good as the originals.
It is only when someone adds a special and well-designed feature that makes an otherwise ordinary tool extraordinary. There is only one MP3 player that I know of that can be used with other devices like car or home stereos without extra cords or attachments.
The DUO MP3 is that player different. It is the size and shape of an ordinary audiocassette and can be put in a car or home stereo. It is designed to be controlled by your stereo's buttons, so that your car's fast-forward and rewind buttons go up and down one song respectively and your car's play/stop buttons control whether the player runs or not. It also has the expected headphone jack so that you can use it while walking around. This is very convenient as it allows you to go from listening to headphones to using it in your car's stereo without messing with wires, connectors or adapters.
If you don't mind messing with one wire, the DUO's battery can be charged as it plays in your car's stereo. If your car's tape player door doesn't have to close all the way (most dont), the wire to the (included in package) car power adapter can charge the DUO's rechargable battery while it plays.
The DUO's ability to be used in a car (or home) stereo is what makes it special. It is a whole lot cheaper than getting an in-dash car mp3 player installed and a whole lot simpler than using an mp3 player that requires you to mess with a lot of wires. Of course, the unit is a competent MP3 player. The sound quality is good and I've never had it choke on an MP3. It is easy to copy files to and from it, though it would be easier if it could be used as a USB hard drive. (It does connect via USB but access requires special software, which is included in the package.) The DUO is a good MP3 player all around with an extra feature that makes it stand out from the competition.
