tchoate's Full Review: Dreamgirls [Original Soundtrack] by Original Sound...
I purchased the Dreamgirls soundtrack after seeing the movie. I can imagine that without seeing the movie, the soundtrack will not take on much meaning, but after seeing the movie it will definitely change your perspective of the soundtrack. There are several songs on the soundtrack that will stand out and make you relive that musical scene in the movie. One of those being And I Am Telling You Im Not Going by Jennifer Hudson. This is one song that will amaze you and Jennifer Hudson is the reason, this girl can definitely sing.
The soundtrack follows the chronological order of the movie as far the as the order in which the songs appeared in the movie. The first song Move is a very soulful, upbeat song that features Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles and Anika Noni Rose. Staying upbeat Fake Your Way To The Top Eddie Murphy as Jimmy Thunder Early joins the Dreamettes Jennifer Hudson(as Effie White), Beyonce Knowles(as Deanna Jones) and Anika Noni Rose(as Lorrell Robinson) to sing a powerhouse of a song. Eddie Murphy does a better than expected job on this song and leads the song Cadillac Car with nice vocals and real energy.
On the song Steppin To The Bad Side, Eddie Murphy is joined by Jamie Foxx, Keith Robinson(as CC White) at first and then the song is taken over by the Dreamettes and Murphy. If this song doesnt grab you and make you want to tap your foot then nothing will. Jennifer Hudson then steps up and belts out Love You I Do, which in the movie she is confessing her love for Jamie Foxx(as Curtis Taylor) in the movie. I Want You Baby once again finds Eddie Murphy joining the girls singing. Family is one song on the soundtrack that just doesnt make me want to jump up and down.
The song Dreamgirls is a great song, with the blended voices of Hudson, Knowles and Rose, it will make you want to hear more from these three. Its All Over is more spoken dialogue between Hudson and Knowles than it is a song, personally I could have done without it on the cd. When I First Saw You a duet with Beyonce and Jamie Foxx is a great addition to the cd and a very enjoyable song. Listen which is performed by Beyonce is a beautiful song that she really does do well. The song One Night Only is showcased in two versions on the cd, one by Jennifer Hudson and the other more of a disco sound by Beyonce. I personally like the Jennifer Hudson version better, but they are both well done songs. Eddie Murphy shines on I Meant You Know Harm/Jimmys Rap the song starts out slow, but Eddie takes over and the rest is rap history, this song fits well into the movie, but is another one they could have left off of the cd.
All in all this is a great movie soundtrack and if you have seen the movie Dreamgirls then you will definitely want to buy the cd. Jennifer Hudson will wow you on screen and on this cd. As I said earlier, this girl can sing! I keep this cd in my car and enjoy listening to it when driving to and from work. The songs are great, the talent is great and you will not be disappointed! I would advise you to see the movie before buying the soundtrack as it will definitely come across much better!
