Ames100's Full Review: Electronic Digital Kitchen Scale. Best Kitchen Sca...
This electronic scale features:
- Weight range up to 5 Kg (11 pounds) with a resolution of 1 gram or .05 oz. depending on units selected. - LCD readout - Glass platform for easy cleaning - Choice of units: pounds and ounces, ounces, kilograms or grams - Tare function to zero the scale and remove the weight of a container already on it (yes, Tare is a real word - look it up in the dictionary!) - Wide stable base with non-slip rubber feet
The good news is that it's reasonably accurate. In my tests with both small and large objects of known weight I got pretty good readings (less than 1% error), and the readings were consistently repeatable. I bought two, and they matched each other's readings exactly.
It takes about 5 seconds to start up and zero the scale. There's a brief LCD check that turns on every LCD segment, then a rotating pattern while it zeroes. After that the weight readout is continuous, and it takes less than a second to stabilize when you change the weight on the platform. You can change the units displayed by pressing the Unit button. The display shows Err for over-weight or Lo for battery too low. It times off after 2 minutes, or you can turn it off with the On/Off button.
The LCD is big enough to read easily. The 3 small buttons on the front (On/Off, Unit, and Tare) are not very clearly marked, but there's only 3 of them, so it's not hard to remember which is which.
I think it looks quite nice with the glass platform on top and the sleek silver plastic base. It's compact enough to slip easily in a drawer or cupboard, and the internal battery power source at least means that there are no cords to deal with.
Minor drawbacks: - Requires a 9 volt battery (more expensive than AAs and doesn't last as long). No battery is provided. - Low profile shape means that larger objects on the platform can obscure the LCD (but see below). - No backlight for the LCD - Loose battery cover can fall off (one unit was better than the other, but both were loose)
If the object being weighed is big enough to block your view of the display, you can press the Tare button to zero the scale and read the weight as a negative number after you remove the object. Otherwise the display doesn't hold the dynamic weight reading.
No container is provided for weighing loose material like cooking ingredients - bring your own.
There's an adequate instruction leaflet in the box. It doesn't say much, but it's enough. The foam packing blocks in the box secure the weighing platform so that it won't be crushed during shipment - always a good idea for a sensitive instrument.
Overall, very suitable for use as a kitchen scale for weighing ingredients, or as a postal scale.
