cletta1201's Full Review: Escape by Enrique Iglesias
Although being the son of Julio Iglesias certainly can’t hurt your cause, Enrique Iglesias deserves much credit for building his career without exploiting his father’s fame and notoriety and for using viable talent to advance himself. Enrique also deserves a few props for riding the Latin wave out and not becoming a flash in the pan. His first English language album simply-entitled ”Enrique” sold over 23 million records worldwide and with ”Escape” he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

Having been a fan of the music of Señor Iglesias for quite some time – I’ve come to appreciate his flare for the melodramatic and his vocal styling. The album sets out with ”Escape” which is a hopeful song about love which is a theme that runs throughout all of the albums songs. ”Don’t Turn Off The Lights” is produced to the hilt but it really works. Every note, every drum beat all of the background singers even Iglesias’ half-screech/sing falsetto thing that he’s so good at. ”Love To See You Cry” is quite simply: perfect. It’s a song that doesn’t miss one thing (it’s essentially already remixed itself) and its stirring and wonderful: ”I don’t know why why/ But I love to see you cry/ I don’t know why why/ It just makes me feel alive”. Revolving around a bitter breakup there is a painful sadness to it that is softened by hushed female vocals in the background.
Although you’ve already seen the over the top video for ”Hero” eight thousand times on MTV and VH1 – somehow its not so bad without the visual. The album version is just a bit softer and mellower than the one you’re accustomed to hearing, which adds a bit of tenderness. ”One Night Stand” is a song whose subject speaks for itself. While I prefer my Iglesias in ballad form he’s fully capable of punching it up which he proves with “Don’t Turn Off The Lights” as well as with “One Night Stand”.
In addition to having co-wrote all of the albums songs the material on “Escape” has matured and although 15 year olds will fall for his smoldering looks – this album isn’t really for kids. It’s not a fluffy look at love but a decidedly adult look at lust, rejection, sex and ecstasy. ”She Be The One” about a hypnotic woman who emits everything about sex is one of those mid-tempo jams that Iglesias is really good at delivering.
”Love 4 Fun” and ”Maybe” are just a bit under whelming for my palate but there are in no way terrible songs. “Love 4 Fan” just sounds a little too cute for me but I liked the lyrics. With “Escape” Enrique has staked his claim as a viable artist not just a Latin heartthrob but if you like him in Spanish than you have no worries because he threw in 3 tracks just for you. ”No Apagues La Luz” [Don’t Turn Off The Light] sounds even better in Spanish and if you thought he was emotional on “Hero” in English – check ”Hereo” which might make you cry (if you’re the feeble, overly-emotional type).
- Final Thoughts -
Enrique Iglesias is here and he wants you to listen to him. He can write songs, he can sing and no surprise – he’s really good at both of those. New Iglesias fans should definitely go back in his musical catalogue and check out his Spanish-language albums, which are real treasures. Don’t dismiss Iglesias as some juvenile singer who doesn’t have a clue – one listen to “Escape” would prove otherwise.
