Kittyokc's Full Review: Feline Greenies and reg; Tempting Tuna Flavor 3 oz...
At a recent visit to the vet for a checkup, our four year old cat Reva was found to have a lot of plaque and tartar buildup on her teeth and she also had a touch of gingivitis, so the vet recommended we give her some tartar control type treats to see if that would help. Usually, we've fed the cats just any old treat that they'd like and never regularly, so I never really worried about ingredients, but since these treats would be a regular part of their diet, I paid attention and was surprised to find that there aren't that many treats out there that are actually good for them.
I scoured the treat isle at our local Petsmart and the best one I could find was Feline Greenies Tempting Tuna Flavor. I had heard rave reviews of how great Greenies were from others, they didn't include by-products in the ingredients and they are touted as a dental treat, so I decided to give them a try.
Feline Greenies Tempting Tuna Flavor comes in a 3 oz. resealable pouch, the ziplock seal helps keep them fresh between feedings, although with the amount you're suppose to feed them, they won't last long if you have more than one cat.
Feline Greenies claim, right on the package that they are...
Natural formula with added vitamins, minerals and taurine
Less than 2 calories per piece
Helps reduce tartar and plaque buildup
100% nutritionally complete and balanced
The big test came with the cats, Reva and Frisky. Reva generally isn't a treat eater and the vet said she map prefer that hard treat over the softer treats that we've tried in the past. Frisky really isn't picky and will eat just about anything, we knew he had plaque buildup too, plus bad breath, so we were hoping these would help him too.
Feline Greenies are a small, hard treat as compared to the softer treats of Pounce and others similar. They was surprised to find that they don't really have an offensive odor as some treats do. By no means do they smell pleasant to a humans nose, but they aren't offensive either.
The guidelines are to feed your cat a certain amount of these treats twice a day to help with their plaque problems. As I mentioned before, if you have more than one cat, these treats can go fairly fast going by the feeding guidelines. Reva is a small cat, under 10 pounds and she is suppose to be fed 6 to 8 pieces twice a day, Frisky is over ten but under 15 pounds and is suppose to be fed 8 to 10 pieces twice a day, so you can go through the pouch fairly quickly with multiple cats. Cats over 15 pounds should be fed 10 to 12 pieces twice a day.
The test came and we gave the cats their allotted number of treats, Reva actually ate 4 of the 6 I gave her and then walked away, Frisky ate is 8 pieces and then Reva's leftovers. We kept trying, sometimes I could get Reva to eat some, other times she just walked away. Frisky on the other hand, has eaten every piece we've given him and wants more.
I know Reva hasn't eaten enough to help her problem, so we are going to have to look for another treat or something that may work. Frisky hasn't been in yet for a checkup yet to see if it has helped his plaque problem, but I have noticed that it has helped his breath, it's definitely not as stinky as it was before, leading me to think that these treats are doing something for him.
As I mentioned before, these have no by-products, I won't list them all, but here are the top six ingredients listed on the packaging...Chicken Meal, Ground Brewers Rice, Ground Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Poultry Fat and Sprayed Dried Hydrolyzed Chicken Protein Concentrate.
If your cats like treats, has stinky breath or has plaque problems, I definitely recommend you give these a try. While I'm not sure how much improvement has been made on the plaque front, it has definitely improved Frisky's breath, he had really horrible breath and now it doesn't stink anymore. Although it is a bit expensive, we paid $2.46 for ours, it has definitely made it much more pleasant when Frisky gets in your face for some loving.
