| nursing3's Full Review: First Response 1-Step Pregnancy Test |
Imagine a woman, dragging a bunch of little kids into the drugstore. Looking around for a pregnancy test, where are they??? Ah, there they are! 'No, don't touch that!' 'Please stop kicking your brother!' 'No, we are not going to buy any candy!' Looking at all the different brands, she hurriedly decides on the cheapest ones which comes in a 2 pack. Always handy to have an extra one when you test too early.
To the register, where she tries to look like it is totally normal to have so many little ones and buy a pregnancy test. At least the cashier is well trained and doesn't make any remarks on it :-)
This story describes how I went to get this pregnancy test. Didn't get to use it that cycle though, since I got my period two days late, when I wanted to test. So it was sitting in my closet, waiting for the next cycle.
The test works by measuring HCG in your urine, if you are pregnant, your body will start producing this hormone and it will show up in your urine, a little bit from 10 days past ovulation on, but the numbers double every day. The test has a certain threshold, showing positive when the numbers are high enough. So it can show a negative, when in reality you are pregnant, but the HCG concentration in your urine isn't high enough yet. If that happens, try again within a few days, or use a more sensitive test. The First Response will show you 2 lines if you are pregnant, only 1 if you are not. The one line is to make sure the test worked correctly, if no lines show up at all, something went wrong and you'll have to retest with another one.
Back to my story. I take my BBT (Basal Body Temperature), so I have a very good grip on my cycle. I saw my ovulation happen, then my temp went up and the waiting game started. 12 days after ovulation, my temp went up even more, which could mean a pregnancy. Could be just normal variation too, but having the temptation of a test in the closet proved too much for me, so I run downstairs, got out the test, and went to the bath room. Opened the foil packet, took off the cap and peed on the absorption part of the stick. I won't bore you with the details of how messy it can be if the pee kind of bounces of the stick in all kinds of directions in addition to what gets absorbed :-) Closed the test, put it down on the kitchen counter, and started making tea. Was very patient, tried not looking for 2 minutes, although my eyes kept getting drawn towards it.
Finally 2 minutes were over and I looked more closely! Two lines!!! One was very faint, very light, but it definitely was there. That meant I was pregnant again! Didn't really believe it yet though, I had an early miscarriage just before this and I wanted more confirmation. So I decided to use the other test of the 2 pack two days later, 14 days past ovulation, when my period would be officially due.
Two days later, I got up, used my first morning urine for the test again and I got another faint line, but faster this time and darker than before. So I was definitely pregnant and my hcg had gone up!!! Now I really believed it!
I would say that the test worked great for me, I was impressed that it gave me a positive already 2 days before my period was due. This is not the most sensitive test out there, I know there are more sensitive ones, but I though this wasn't bad. Both tests gave me the correct results, although I have to admit that I used first morning urine both times, since the HCG concentration in that is higher than during the rest of the day. Since I was testing so early, I tried to maximize my chances of finding out about a possible pregnancy.
I am giving this four stars, since I am happy with it, and it was easy to use, but I also know that there are more sensitive tests out there and would like to save my five star ratings for the more powerful ones. A good overview of the sensitivity of all the different pregnancy tests can be found at http://www.onna.org/information/hpt.html for whoever is interested in getting a more sensitive one.
