The Foundation Trilogy is probably misnamed, since it is actually nine short stories, which were put out in three books. The first five stories are in the first book, while the other two books have two stories each.
As Azimov himself wrote in a forward that was printed in the paperback edition that I have, most of the action takes place offstage. This is very true in the first story, 'The Dead Hand'. There are huge battles and people dying, but we see none of it. Instead, we hear conversations between a general and his hostages.
There is a little more action in 'The Mule', but again, there are battles that we don't see. I recommend the entire trilogy (actually, the whole series, including the two prequels and the two sequels) are good. This is my favorite of the three books.
