Pros: There's pros? Ok, pretty packaging. I like purple. (45-88 lb dogs)
Cons: Fleas, fleas, and more fleas! It doesn't work!
The Bottom Line: I won't be buying this again. It doesn't work on my dog.
Update: I buy it to alternate treatments with Advantage, it's the only way it worked for us.
shanedonna's Full Review: Frontline Top Spot for Dogs
I applied Frontline Plus to my dog 3 days ago, and haven't seen ANY reduction in fleas at all. This isn't the first application given to this dog, either.
My dog is a rescue dog, and received his first (that I know of) dose at the beginning of July, another at the beginning of August, both by the rescue folks. I adopted the dog 3 days after his August treatment, and he was completely infested with fleas.
At his first vet visit, the vet noted that he was very infested, and sold me a package of 3 doses, with instructions to apply the first dose the last week of August, so that it would have been 3 weeks between applications. I did that, with no results.
Fast forward another 3 weeks...wash the dog with flea shampoo (typical permethrin stuff), see a reduction in fleas. Not wiped out, but reduced more than anything I've seen with Frontline. Wait 3 days, apply Frontline Plus AGAIN. Wait 3 days, write this review, STILL GOT FLEAS, LOTS AND LOTS OF THEM.
I called the number on the box and talked to someone from Merial. They don't want to admit that the product may not be working, it must be my error, I'm doing something wrong, even though I followed directions exactly. You know, I could be doing something wrong, I've never used this stuff before, my last dog died over 6 years ago, and this wasn't readily available at that time. BUT I'm pretty sure the rescue people that I got the dog from know how to apply it properly, since they do it all the time, and the dog came with the fleas already installed. After much painful tooth pulling, the good folks at Merial offered my choice of a one time refund or a replacement of the product. At the time, I decided on a replacement, figuring that I may have a bad batch. Now, I think I made a bad choice, and should ask for my money back. This stuff doesn't work any better than a traditional flea dip. My poor dog is miserable, and it's only a matter of extreme luck that the rest of the family isn't miserable, too!
Update 1/7/06:
After telephoning the rescue folks, they said that some of them sometimes experienced this problem with the product. Their solution is to try alternating months with another, similar product, but one that uses slightly different chemicals. They recommended using Advantage. The way this would work is one month you would use Frontline product, the next Advantage product, then back to Frontline, etc. I tried this, and it is working so far. The Advantage killed off all the fleas the first month, and alternating with the Frontline Plus helps keep the ticks away, as well. The explanation seems to be that the fleas develop a resistance to the product, and alternating helps with that.
