If you want to give a mommy to be a great shower gift, you have to give her the Germ Guardian Nursery Baby Toy Sanitizer Sterilizer. This was the absolutely most useful item I received at my baby shower. I used this more than any other gift except for maybe my pack N play and my bottles.
Basically this device plugs into your wall in the kitchen ( at least I used it in my kitchen ). Next you open the lid, and place pacifiers, small toys, or in my case glass baby bottles in the sanitizer. You then Close the lid, flick the button to turn it on, and the sanitizer starts to sanitize your items. It takes approximately 20 minutes for the sanitizer to do its job, then when the job is complete the sanitizer automatically shuts off. You can let the items cool for a few minutes before taking them out of the sanitizer, and then whalaaa !! Germ Free Baby items.
This item is so great to sanitize those pacifiers that end up on the floor more than in the baby's mouth. It was also super for me with my glass baby bottles. I can't run my dishwasher 5 times a day, so in a pinch I would just wash out the bottle in the sink and then put the bottle in the sanitizer. I don't know if i could have survived those first few months without this device, it was really a lifesaver.
My only complaint about this is that I wished at times it was bigger and could hold more bottles. I used 4 oz glass bottles for my daughter and about 3 of those bottles could fit in the sanitizer at one time. Beleive me, there were times I wish it could have held double that.
This item is not cheap. It was about 50 dollars at Babies R US but it was well worth it if you ask me. It's also great for sterlizing small toys that baby likes to put in his/her mouth. The machine feels like it's made out of plastic, and it's not the most heavy duty item in the world, but it gets the job done. The Color of the Sanitizer is a light blue, so the color gives you a relaxed " clean " feeling.
Overall, If you want to give a gift that is somewhat unique as well as useful, give a Germ Guardian Nursery Baby Toy Sanitizer Sterilizer. The mommy to be will thank you graciously after a few months of using this. I can't imagine my life without it
