| mercinary's Full Review: Golf Digest Golf Cart |
Background
I've been golfing for about 6 years. I've owned a couple of different golf bag carts (the Golf Digest Golf Cart being my second).
I purchased this item roughly one year ago from my local department store. I paid about $30 for the item. I made the purchase after a wheel on my old card broke. I use the golf cart very frequently, and have a good feel for the quality and features of this pull cart vs the competition.
Sturdiness
While much of the cart is made from heavy plastics, the shaft and axle of the cart are made from steel. Compared to other models I have used (where the shaft is completely plastic), the metal really makes a difference. I've used this cart a lot in the last year, and it has held up very, very well. No complaints whatsoever.
Bag Fit
This cart will fit any standard golf bag. I expect that it would even fit a stand bag, however if you have a stand bag, I suggest trying the fit out before you purchase. The bag is held up by a plastic foot on the cart and is held in place by two adjustable straps. They have got things worked out well in this department, as my bag has never come off the cart after strapping it in.
Compact
This cart, like all golf bag carts out there, folds in half for storage purposes. This is handy for putting the cart into the trunk of your car, as it wouldn't fit otherwise. The size of the cart when folded down, is relatively small (maybe 3 feet long). One complaint I have is that when trying to unfold the unit, the cart handle gets suck between the two wheels. This makes for clumsy unfolding. When the unit is unfolded, it locks securely in place via a latch on the shaft of the cart. With my old cart, this latch was made of flimsy plastic, which made the latch connection questionable. This new cart has a more sturdy heavy duty plastic latch, which I am pleased with. Finally, unlatching (in order to fold-down) is very easy. The latch comes off with a quick flick of your thumb.
Wheels
This model is a two wheel model. If you look at more pricey carts, you will find that they have a third wheel in front. I personally don't find the need for the third wheel, as the only added benefit is that you don't have to tilt your cart back to walk with it. I'm a young guy...I can still manage to tilt and balance my cart on two wheels.
The wheels are a good size. If wheels are too large, they get in the way (and you often roll over your buddy's toes!). If the wheels are too small, you get a lot of vibration and bumping when you pull the cart. This particular cart provides a feature that allows you to remove the wheels. Each wheel has a single heavy duty plastic nut unscrews, allowing removal. I guess this is intended to make the cart even more compact. I don't understand this feature, as the cart is already compact enough when folder down. I've never needed to take the wheels off. In fact, the feature is a bit obnoxious, because every month or so, I need to tighten the wheels, as the nuts have come loose.
Handle Design
The handle has a comfortable design. I usually push my cart, however the handle is good for either pulling or pushing the cart. The handle is intentionally curved to fit your wrist and hand position.
Scorecard Holder
The cart sports a plastic scorecard holder which sits just below the handle. I'm not usually the guy that holds the scorecard (lousy math skills), however when I have used the holder, I have been pleased with it. This model opens like a book, allowing you to put the scorecard inside, and latch it closed. The latching mechanism is a great feature, as I have seen other carts where the scorecard holder is a flimsy piece of plastic that does not have a latch. I've lost more than one scorecard to such a design. With this Golfer's Digest Golf Cart, you'll never lose your scorecard.
Golf Ball Holder
Near the scorecard holder there are 2 golf ball sized storage spaces provided. There was CLEARLY no quality assurance done on this feature. I can't get any golf ball to stay in the spots provided....not even for a couple of seconds, let alone while I'm pulling the cart along a fairway. On my cart, the holes provided are too small, resulting in the ball popping out as soon as I push it into the slot.
Pencil Holder
Built into the scorecard holder is a slot for a golf pencil. Similar to the ball holder, the pencil holder is completely useless. I've been to dozens of golf courses, and the pencils are always the same size. Why couldn't the manufacturer of this cart get the pencil holder size correct?
Bottle Holder
For those of you who get thirsty on the course, this cart comes with a water bottle holder and water bottle. For me, the water bottle was getting in the way, so I was happy that the bottle and the holder were both removable. I'm pretty sure I threw them away the day I bought the cart!
Competitors
There are a fair amount of golf carts out there. This cart is on the low end of the price scale. That said, I believe that the quality you get for this price is very good. Now, if you're one of those people who want top of the line everything, I suggest you go invest in a Bag Boy cart, which retail for $100-$200. Those models have three wheels, and are often made of solid metal throughout. For me, the once a week golfer, I'm happy with this $30 product given the quality that is built into it.
