cbgresh's Full Review: Juliana Lee Hatkoff and Craig Hatkoff - Good bye T...
My 7 year old daughter is scheduled to have her tonsils removed in 6 days. She's a bit nervous and me, well, I am terrified. I had my tonsils out back in 1967 and to say things have changed a little is the understatement of the week. I stayed a week, she stays 10 hours. Getting her ready for the big event has been tough. The doctors explanation of the procedure was anything but "feel good" for a 7 year old. Even Mom got a bit queasey at the description. I thought there had to be a good book about tonsil removal at the library and what I found was surprising. There really was only one book that was truly written for children and at a child's level of understanding.
This book is Good-Bye Tonsils. It was written by a child, Juliana Lee Hatkoff, as told to her father, Craig Hatkoff. The most wonderful thing about this book is that the writing is done by a child so children can totally relate to the speech patterns and the descriptions. The "magic mask", the "silly drink", the "little needle in my wrist" were all descriptions that my daughter could understand because they were her words of choice to describe those things too.
The book doesn't talk "down" to children at all like many other books I took ouit of the library about the same subject matter. It's a journal of sorts that takes the reader on a 2 month journey through doctor visits and diagnosis to the pre-surgery party and GoodBye Tonsil cake and finally through the hospital experience and then the recovery and subsequent show and tell back at school.
I highly recommend this book for any child have their tonsils removed or having any surgery for that matter. It has definitely helped my daughter to be less apprehensive about her pending surgery.
The book is for ages 4-8 and has 32 pages. It is available in hardback and soft cover. It can be purchased through Amazon.com, Books A Million or can be found at most local libraries.
