| Mitchellie_JG's Full Review: Gray's Papaya |
This restaurant is one of many reasons I have been unable to become a vegetarian. It's true; I've tried many times, but I love hot dogs, and Grey's Papaya makes the best hot dogs in the city! (They are less beefy tasting than Nathans, which is why I prefer them).
Okay, all you can get here is hot dogs and juice. Interesting combo, but the first time I went, and asked for a Diet Coke, they laughed at me, and said "Try the papaya juice". They also have OJ, and pineapple juice, and pina colada flavored juice, and some other kinds, but papaya is the best and most popular.
There is always a line here, but it moves quickly (5-10 min), and there are no tables, so if you want to eat inside, you stand by the window, or counter. Otherwise, I suggest going into the park.
I always get the Recession Special, which is 2 hot dogs, and a medium juice for $1.95, which is insanely cheap for NYC. The yellow umbrella guys charge $1 per hot dog. Plus, this is better quality.
The decor is very interesting. They have lots of political slogans, old and new. Hanging from the ceilings are those foldup pineapples that they sell in party stores. It's all very interesting, as is the variety of people who come in for lunch. There are college students, teenagers, mothers, and businessmen.
