I am the new department head of special education at my school. That was my official promotion notice from the principal this September--I think I get 20 cents a day more and lots more stress. However, rank has its privileges I have been told, so my first official duty was to claim the computer and printer the previous department head had.
This meant that I was now the proud owner and user of a Dell PC and a HP-970 CXi Desk Jet printer. I must confess, the use of this printer alone is almost worth the headaches my title and responsibilities have brought.
I am on the internet with my students on a daily basis and showing my special education student how to research their topics. To help them take notes, I print up the pages they reach and show them how to read, extract the information by highlighting what is important. Country flags, photographs of the Olympics, animal life in Australia, political cartoons--you name it, I can find it on the internet with the students and they can write a paper for use in their regular education classes.
The quality of the pictures and text is almost amazing. With a pair of scissors and a glue stick--you can see that my cut and paste technique is pre-technology date--my students can easily write papers that can compete with their nondisabled peers.
I can print out pictures relating to our literature units to help them visualize the settings in which our novels take place. While reading about the Vikings, we visited L'Anse Aux Meadows via the Internet and printed up wonderful pictures.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am required to write reports, modify tests, complete testing, graph test scores for psychoeducational batteries and all sorts of fun stuff relating to the IEPs I write on a daily basis. This HP-970 has proven to be a worthy helper and makes my life so much easier that I almost feel sorry for the other special education teachers who don't have this wonderful tool.
Almost--enough to let them use it whenever they want, not enough to give it to them. The printer lets my IEPs have a professional look to them.
My only complaint has been the high cost of replacing ink cartridges. Last week I had to purchase a new color and black cartridge--$34 for one, $40 for the other. Not cheap. However, the expense was easily warranted and hopefully I will be reimbursed by the school district for the cost.
