| grygomaca's Full Review: HTC PPC-6800 Smartphone |
I purchased my HTC PPC 6800 phone because I was ready for something more gadgety after having a plain old Razor. And having had 2 pocket pc's in the past and being really happy with them, I thought this was the way to go.
My service provider is US Cellular and the web data plan is an additional $25/month.
SUPER SIZE: I'll be honest, this is a brick of a phone. Size wasn't a concern of mine because I just throw it in my purse. But if size is a factor for you, you should compare this smart phone to others before purchasing.
GOOD CAMERA: 2mp is inadequate as just a camera, but great for a phone. Let's face it, if I want high quality photos, I'm using my camera instead. But for quick, on-the-go photos, the camera on the PPC 6800 works great.
RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES: I have a slim metal cover for my phone. It's aluminum and really takes a beating. I also purchased a screen protector and a 2gig memory card. Another accessory is a phone holder for the car, which works great with the speakerphone on while driving.
PROGRAMS FOR FUN: If you would like an iPhone-like touch screens, you might be interested in Pointui Home, which is a program I installed. All screens are mainly touch and have a really innovative look.
Tiny Twitter is another program I installed. I love twitter, you can access it via the web or on their mobile site, but TT is more like the real thing. Just for fun.
MMS PICTURE MESSAGES: This phone has so many great features...I was appaled when I learned that it does not receive MMS messages! However, there is a quick, easy and free fix. I looked it up on the web and within minutes, I installed a program (PPCGeeksSprintMMS.cab) and was instantly able to receive MMS messages. That's the best part of this phone. There's always an easy solution. And having access to the web enables you to get any plug-in or program you need right away.
OTHER FEATURES: I'll admit, I have not sat down and gone through the manual to learn how to fully utilize this phone. I do know that it has voice speed dial...a feature I have not used. I know it's available because I tend to hit the wrong button when I turn it on sometimes and there it is. I would use something like that, I just need to find some time to investigate the phone further.
My ppc 6800 is also my alarm clock. It's great. It offers 3 alarms. Great for a hard sleeper, as you can have the phone vibrate, flash on/off and play a sound.
FABULOUS BATTERY LIFE: This phone has outstanding battery life. I text message more than average throughout the day and use it for at least 2 hours of talk-time daily as well...and on speakerphone. I have a car charger, a charger at home and at work. When not in use, I'm charging the phone - even when it's not necessary. I have not run the phone dead yet and don't intend on it. But I have forgotten to charge it for a day or two. I would say for average use, you will need to charge it every other day.
RESETTING THE PHONE (again?): I don't routinely restart my phone. I do, however, find it necessary to do it about once a week. If the phone starts acting out of whack, then I know it's time to restart. Problem solved every time.
In conclusion, I am really happy with my PPC 6800. If all you want is a cell phone, this is clearly not going to be the phone for you. It's much too cumbersome and just dialing a number isn't as easy as it is on a Razor. But if a smart phone is what you are after, this should be one of the contenders in your search.
