CJCraft's Full Review: Timothy Zahn - Heir to the Empire
I haven't read every Star Wars book out there. But I have read enough to pretty much know what to expect and this book was so much better than I ever hope for it to be. I'm not surprised that the paperback is in the top 1000 books on Amazon.com even after a couple years.
I gave this book a 9 out of 10.
Background:
I am a 25-year-old male engineering and computer science student living in SC. I do have a large humanities background.
Overview:
The thing that I liked the most about the book was all of the villains. If you think that Darth Vader and Darth Maul are the best Star Wars villains then you should see some of the villains in this book. They have almost as much personality and depth as do the heroes.
The Ysalamiri: I really like these creatures. They block out the force and make Jedi powerless.
Grand Admiral Thrawn: The best villain in the book. He is a brilliant strategist and one of the most dangerous leaders you could go up against.
Joruus C'baoth: A dark Jedi that makes his entrance in this book. Could this be the start of the rise of the Dark Side?
Mara Jade: The best female villain I have seen in a long time. The question is can Luke stop her from getting revenge on him for destroying her life.
The book picks up a few years after the end of The Return of the Jedi. The New Republic has just gotten itself back on its feet. And if it can survive the new threat the Empire has come up with they might just make it work.
I really think that any fan of the Star Wars movies will like this book. It is a great way to get your Star Wars fix while waiting on the release of the next Star Wars movie.
Basically the Empire has found a new Dark Jedi to use to destroy the Rebel forces. And if Luke and the rest of the gang don't come up with a plan soon it is over. Fortunately, Luke turns out to be very resourceful and always has a few tricks up his sleeve.
