Cheapest decent keg you can buy. (Reply to this comment)
by buttastic
I've read and understand all the hate towards Zeigenbock due to the whole A-B issue. I know of Shiner's history and respect that.
But a keg of Shiner Bock costs $20 more on average than a keg of Zeigenbock.
If you're buying 6 packs, why are you even bothering with either brands? There are much better beers out there. Pick up some Independence Bootlegger or some Victory Storm King Stout or something.
While I respect and enjoy Shiner (especially the Black Lager), I throw parties a couple times a month and getting 3 or so kegs of Zeigenbock saves me over $60 per party.
Face it, neither Shiner nor Zeigenbock are particularly good beers. The only reason people buy them is because they're a little bit cheaper than beers from smaller, better microbreweries. I would never waste my money on a 6 pack of either, but when it comes down to getting kegs, Zeigenbock wins out.

No need to worry about Shiner... (Reply to this comment)

I moved from Texas to Knoxville, TN several months ago, and I was surprised to see that Shiner is served at many of the local restaurants - as one of the draft selections. I even went to a music festival downtown one weekend and Shiner was one of the 4 beers that were available.
The Zeigenbock radio ads I used to hear in Texas were pretty humorous. They try to portray Shiner as a "poseur" beer and encourage you to drink a "real" Texas beer. Funny... when I was in college at Texas A&M I remember seeing Shiner all over the place - can't say the same for Bud-zeigenbock....

The real question may be... (Reply to this comment)
by davidmanning
Do you think that the Shiner Bock drinker is dumb enough to fall for the Anheuser-Busch ploy? I can't see this driving Shiner Bock drinkers over to the A-B side, though it might move some Budweiser drinkers a step away from crap into slightly more pleasant crap.
If the average Shiner Bock drinker is willing to give his/her corporate beer up for the larger conglomerate, probably not that big a loss. I guess the real problem is the fight for tap handles and shelf space.
By the way, excellent beer-food pairing. My mouth is watering. And by "watering," I mean "gagging."

Reading between the lines, I have a sneaky suspicion this 'beer' is not a favourite of yours!

Yah, I heard that the Celis beers are rolling in Texas again, but that it's not Pierre behind them this time, but rather his daughter. Nice to see the passion for great Belgian practices passing on to the next generation -- one can only hope she is as passionate about her beers as Pierre has always been.
Salud!

The Celis beers are being made by the Michigan Brewing Company now. I haven't been able to get a hold of them yet, but maybe Mark has? I heard they were headed for Texas. So how was the White you tried Chad?
Cheers!

John,
You make me so sad bringing up Celis. I was such a big fan of all their beers, especially the Pale Bock and the White. Of course, in comes Miller and buys them up only to close the brewery about a year later.
The good news is one of my favorite local bars somehow just got a keg of Celis White. I'm not quite sure how this happened, but I'm not complaining.

It is very true (Reply to this comment)

The sole purpose of marketing Zeigenwhatever is to drive Shiner out of business. So far I don't think they're succeeding, but I don't underestimate the capacity for the simple mind to be bought out by an insipid beer and lots of clever billboard advertising.
Good review.

Come on, Mark, tell us how you really feel about Ziegen Bock. :-) Honestly, when I tried this one I didn't find it to be much different than Shiner. In a way I can't blame AB for creating a beer style the local market wants. That's all part of competition. After all, Celis did the same thing by offering a bock too, although I don't think they were ever a threat to Shiner's business.
That said, if given a choice between the two I would take the Shiner almost every time. And in fact I do enjoy it on tap from time to time here in Atlanta.
Cheers!

Interesting theory... (Reply to this comment)
by chad8246
...that I actually never thought about but now believe.
I'm pretty much a die hard Shiner drinker, but will drink Zeigenbock on occasion. Of course, now it seems pretty clear they're trying to run our favorite little brewery out of business. Damn them!!!
Nice review as well.

Hey, I've never heard of this beer, but we did drink plenty of Shiner Bock in South Padre on Spring Break back in '95! Never heard of that either until I went to Texas. Good review, great writing style.
