Freak369's Full Review: Avery Hi Liter Pen Style Highlighter Fluorescent
Until a little over a year ago, the nerdlings were convinced that yellow was the only color that was acceptable when highlighting information. Since then they have broadened their color base a little and have added the Avery Fluorescent Blue to their line up. I doubt that they will be giving up their Sanford Fluorescent Yellow Highlighters any time soon but the Avery is giving it a real run for the money. The main reason they started asking for the Avery brand was that they came in a wide tip that could also be rotated and used for fine line highlighting. With the fluorescent yellow the brightness tends to fade after a while, especially if it is exposed to direct sunlight. With the Avery blue, the color stays vibrant longer and doesnt hurt your eyes when you are rereading text.
Avery Fluorescent Blue Hi-Liter
When most people hear the word fluorescent they instantly think of a screaming yellow color that hurts your eyes. This marker is fluorescent but it isnt obnoxious or loud. It will make text stand out from the rest of the page, even one that is filled with pictures or images. Since the boys are starting to use their printer more, they were looking for something that they could use on the print outs so they could mark off sections of interest. This meant that they had to experiment with a few different brands and colors until they found a few that didnt smear the ink or pull up the ink and ruin the tip of the marker. The said that the Avery brand of highlighters / hi-liters worked the best with their printer but for some reason, when I used it on the print outs from my previous printer [Lexmark Z43] it would pull up the ink or smear it.
The tip is thick allowing you to cover two lines at a time or it can be rotated to the side if you want to only highlight or underline a small section. So far they have only gone through three of these and trust me, they use them almost every single day. If you leave the cap off of it or dont press it on all the way you wont have to worry about the ink supply drying out. They accidentally left one uncapped for several days and it still worked great after they rubbed the tip on a piece of paper a few times. The cap does snap tightly back in to place and when in use, the cap can be placed on the back end of the marker so it doesnt get lost. Avery Fluorescent Blue Hi-Liter features ink that is non-toxic so you never have to worry about it irritating your skin. It does take a little bit of effort to remove it from your hands but Ive never had any trouble getting it all off with the use of a finger brush and some soap. There is no smell to the ink so you wont have to worry about the fumes bothering you or those around you.
Things To Know
If blue isnt your style or you are looking for something with a bit more impact, this style Avery marker is available in orange, yellow, pink and green. You can also purchase it in the standard colors [non-fluorescent]. These can be purchased individually, in two or three packs, six pack sets and by the dozen [one color per box]. I usually get these at Rite-Aid when they have them on sale since I know that they rotate their stock often. You can also find these at Wal-Mart, Target and most office supply stores. The usual price for the individual markers is about .79 cents, two and three packs from $1.99 to $2.19 and by the dozen for about $6.99. If you have never tried these, you might want to purchase one of them and try them out, this way you wont be wasting money or end up with highlighters you dont care for. If you do like them, then your only problem will be trying to pick out the best color for your needs.
The barrel of the highlighter is thick and chunky and does tend to take up a lot of room when compared to other thinner products. If that could possibly be considered a drawback of a highlighter, that is the only one that I can find with regards to the Avery Fluorescent Blue Hi-Liter. The boys never really complained about it taking up too much space when they went on field trips but I know that most of the time they are pressed for space when it comes to pencils, pens and highlighters. Ive been trying to find an Avery highlighter that is thinner or smaller but so far I havent had any luck.
The Bottom Line
So far this has been the best choice for our highlighting needs around the house and when the boys are out at a school function. The color is bright enough to attract your attention but not so much so that your eyes are sore after reading the highlighted text. I really like the fact that the ink doesnt smell and that it is non-toxic, if the boys get it on their hands I dont have to worry about them getting it off as soon as possible or irritating their skin. For the price, this is a great highlighter and I highly recommend this style and color to anyone looking for a long lasting highlighter for school, work or research purposes.
