This is as close to the "correct" category as I could get, epinions has refused to accept new items for review since Nov.14,2000 in the Health & Beauty catagory -Michele
Homedics Paraffin Bath
I received this “spa” as a gift from my husband . At first , I thought great , another dust catcher – you know , those items you stick in your closet or under your bed – next to the other useless items .
Well , this is my epinion , and my apology – to my husband AND Homedic.
I do a lot of “computer” work , and a lot of long-hand writing. I use a cash register/computer at my “second” job, cook and clean – and just generally beat my hands and fingers up on a daily basis.
While I may sit to give my feet a rest – even when I am relaxing – my hands are in motion – everything from gardening to embroidery.
Now I thought this paraffin thing was just another “fad” designed solely to dig into consumer pockets .
Well, irregardless of the designers’ purpose – this thing does work in this way , It soothes your hands.
Yes, it really does make them feel better – inside and out .
When I first set it up – I read the instruction manual , nothing more than a few pages stapled together .
Homedic advised that it would take 4 to 12 hours to melt the 6 lbs.of paraffin included with the “bath”.
Within 3 hours the paraffin was melted ; then per the Manufacturer’s instructions , I turned the heat down and waited one hour before using . I used a lanolin based lotion , then dipped my right hand in , again per instructions, ( 6 times) . The heat from the paraffin immediately reduced the constant dull ache in my knuckles and wrist . With my husband's help , and using one of the bags provided by Homedic , we bagged my hand and left the paraffin on for twenty minutes. After ten minutes I wanted to dip my other hand - the
Lack of pain in my right hand convincing me that my left was in sore need of a dip .
And the pain remained gone for several hours after removing the bag and paraffin .
To date I have dipped my hands , feet, and elbows ( yes, my dry ,ugly elbows) . My hands do NOT look twenty years younger – but they feel it. The dull ache does return – after several hours of work – but now I simply give them a dip at night – and I am ready to go in the morning .
I don’t know if the pain I feel is arthritis , or just overuse , but my Mother – who does have arthritis is also a Homedic Paraffin bath owner and swears her hands have never felt better .
I do know my mobility has improved , and since the only change in my routine is this machine – I assume the paraffin is responsible.
Bear in mind that I have only had this machine since 12/24/00 – but be assured I will update you should my opinion change .
USE:
Per the manufacturer this “bath” can be used on hands, feet, and elbows .
When the machine is plugged in it is ON. There is no on /off switch .
The seettings dial is LOW ( as close to off as you’ll get )
MEDIUM ( with 4 settings for comfort) this is the in use mode)
HIGH ( this is used solely to melt the paraffin , and Homedics stresses that you are never to use the machine to apply parafin at this setting)
The “bath” holds a maximum of 6 lbs. of paraffin , minimum 4lbs. Homedic advises against using the “bath “ with less than 4 lbs. in the tank .
Homedic also recommends discarding the paraffin after use UNLESS you are the only one using it , they then note that you can reuse the paraffin . Since I always wash the area to be “dipped” I reuse the paraffin .
The cost : My husband paid $ 59.99 for this machine at Meijers. It included 6 lbs. of paraffin , and 25 “bags” .
The only drawback I can see is the cost of the paraffin – through Homedic it is $# 15.00 for 2 lbs. ( $7.50 per lb.) T-bone steak is cheaper . Meijer was selling 2 lbs. for $ 9.99 . ( $ 4.99 per lb.) That’s still seems awfully expensive when I compare it to the cost of the Gulfwax ( paraffin) I bought to seal my jelly jars – and I was upset that it cost $ 1.99 per 1 lb. Block . Needless to say I will be looking into an alternative supply of paraffin – although Homedic advises against using any paraffin but their own .
This thing works .
UPDATE: Today is 1/07/01 and I am still unable to place this epinion in the Correct catagory. I have been NR'd by other members not because of the epinion but because of its location - so to those of you who were mislead by the placement of this epinion my sincerest apologies, to those that understand that I felt getting the information out on this New product -( and placing it under Home > Health & Beauty > Health > First Aid > Hot & Cold Therapy > HoMedics Arthritis Mitt HTP-143
instead of Home > Health & Beauty > Health > First Aid > Hot & Cold Therapy > Hot Therapy > Homedics Paraffin Spa Bath simply because this catagory doesn't EXIST ) Thank you !!!
