The year was 1993 and I was just told about a tiny Chinese restaurant to go to for my birthday. Let me just say this, the line to get into this place was longer then I have EVER seen before! I must admit, I was warned, so my best friend and I waited it out. 40 minutes later we get our "table." This was the smallest table I have ever seen in my life, only to be shared by 4 or 5 other couples. The entire restaurant seated 50, and even that may be an exaggeration.
The FOOD! Oh my goodness, the food was out of this universe! I was told to ask for some special shrimp cakes that the owner makes, and I ordered Lo Mein, I must stress to you, if you cannot eat salty things be careful, but if you close your eyes and not look at the greasy interior, not notice the dirty silver wear, and the sardine can feel to the restaurant you WILL feel like you have died and gone to Peking, China. This food is authentic Chinese cooking at its finest! The portions are huge, be prepared for leftovers no matter what you order.
Plan on being in San Francisco??? Make sure you do not miss this piece of San Francisco heritage at its best! Located near Chinatown, North Beach and the Financial District, it makes this jewel of the City easy to access from all directions.
I have not lived in California for over 6 years now and I STILL recommend The House of Nanking to EVERYONE who tells me their vacation plans include San Francisco!
