| newtownbeans's Full Review: Hurom Slow Juicer - HU-100 |
After owning and using the Breville Juice Fountain Elite 800JEXL (review written on ePinions) for about 2 years, I decided to invest in a single auger slow juicer, the Hurom HU-100. The main reason for switching to a single auger slow juicer was to be able to extract juices from leafy vegetables as well as other fruits & veggies. The Breville, although top of the line, is a centrifugal juicer and therefore does not do so well with leafy vegetables.
The Hurom HU-100 is a fantastic machine that has met all of my expectations. It extracts almost every drop of liquid from anything you put into it. The pulp that is ejected is the driest pulp I have ever seen coming out of a juicer.
The Hurom is also much quieter than the Breville. The parts consist of a base which is quite heavy and solid on the countertop. There is also a handle attached to the base which allows for easy movement from counter to closet. On top of the base is the plastic bowl with 2 spouts, pulp election & juice ejection. Into the bowl sits the spinning brush which is very unique because it has 2 soft rubber flaps attached to the inside that line up with strainer screen and constantly clean the strainer as the machine is running. There are 2 different strainers that come with the Hurom, a white one with smaller holes for less pulp and a yellow one with larger holes for more pulp. This is a nice feature that you do not find on centrifugal machines. Into the strainer basket goes the squeezing screw, a large, rather fat heavy turning screw that does all of the mashing and squeezing. On top of that assembly is the hopper with feed tube and pusher. Also included are 2 containers, one for the extracted pulp and one for the juice. They are decent in size and hold more than enough for a tall glass of juice. All of the parts are made of sturdy material.
Assembly & disassembly was very intuitive and easy. All of the parts are very easy to clean but they are not recommended for the dishwasher. One of the nicest features is that you can just pour clean tap water into the hopper and run it through when you are finished juicing. This cleans out most of the parts very well and they only need light cleaning in the sink after you are done. There are 2 ways that the parts can be assembled. You can place each part one at a time onto the base or you can assemble all of the parts together and then place the assembled unit onto the base.
There is only one speed and a reverse switch if the machine jams and you need to run the screw backwards to loosen it up. I have only had to use this once or twice and it works very well. The only caution I would give is that if you run it in reverse, be sure to reseat the hopper at the “close” mark on the base. Running it in reverse will sometimes unseat the hopper from the proper position. The feed tube is smaller than the one on the Breville so pieces have to be cut smaller to fit inside the tube. However, the pusher rarely needs to be used because the large screw seems to suck the pieces very quickly.
The machine comes with a 4-1/2 foot cord and there is no cord storage feature. It has a fairly small footprint, measuring about 16 inches tall, 7 inches wide and 10 inches in length. It weighs almost 12 pounds. It has a single-phase induction motor and is rated at 150w and spins at 80rpm. The Hurom is made in Korea and imported by Hurom USA in Los Angeles, CA. There is a customer service number and a website: slowjuicer.com. The warranty is 2 years on everything and 10 years on the motor.
The instruction manual is easy to understand but does not have any warranty information in it. So I would recommend keeping the original sales receipt for warranty purposes.
The Hurom has a MSRP of $399. but can be found on several internet sites for $359., including Amazon. I purchased mine from a site called veggiesensations and since they had a $20. coupon offer, I got mine for $339. and free shipping.
I am extremely pleased with this juicer. I have used it with carrots, apples, pears, blueberries, kale, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes and much more and it has worked flawlessly, quickly and extracts every last bit of liquid from whatever you feed it. I understand it also works very well with wheatgrass, but I have not yet tried that. I highly recommend this juice extractor to anyone who juices frequently and wants the most efficient method.
