ksevern's Full Review: Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router
Wired house about ten years ago with ethernet cable and a simple four port switch. We could share printers and files and the dial up internet connection. Just switched from dial-up access (26 kbs!) to Wild Blue satellite. Had to replace switch with router and decided to add wireless so that notebook could be used throughout the house. Wow! Set up took only ten minutes after the broadband was functional. NO problems, no hassles.
I wanted to install the router before the Wild Blue installer arrived, but had to wait for broadband before I could install it because it didn't recognize phone line as a connection to the internet. A few years ago, a salesman at Best Buy told me it would work without broadband (after I convinced him that not everyone has DSL, cable, etc., available at any price). I'm glad I didn't buy it then! But I'm happy to have it now.
I live near a large city, but have no options for internet except dial up and satellite. We don't have a huge risk of someone getting on our wireless LAN because they would have to be on our property. However, we fired up the notebook and tried to 'break in' to our network and were unable to do so. Then we authorized the laptop to be on the wireless LAN and it worked beautifully throughout the house. This is one of the best things I have bought in a while!
