cymsteve's Full Review: Iams Large Breed Puppy formula
We purchased our Golden Retriever Floyd in February 1999 and decided from day one that he should only have the best quality food. We did much research on the internet, checked in our local Petsmart and asked around our friends - the general consensus was that we should get a food that was developed purely for large breed dogs. Iams Puppy Large Breed Formula (IPLBF) seemed to fit the bill, it was a bit more expensive than other brands out there, but we wanted the best for our new family member.
Golden Retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia, which means poor formation of the hip joint. Signs of hip dysplasia cannot be detected in the new born puppy, but usually appear in the rapid growth period between four and nine months of age. IPLBF has a lower fat content that helps your puppy maintain a moderate growth rate for healthy skeletal development. We wanted to be sure that Floyd's growth was controlled until he was about 18 months old and then we would slowly switch to the adult formula.

As a comparison, there is is 53% fat and only 11% carbohydrates in the regular Iams Puppy Formula - that's 19% less fat than the IPLBF! Floyd would be a well exercised dog so we wanted him to have plenty of energy but also keep the fat content down.
Floyd loves his food, he digests it easily and it keeps him regular. We can honestly say he genuinely enjoys his mealtimes and we have the satisfaction of knowing he's healthy for it too.
Initially Iams was only available at pet stores, online or from the local vet, but now they seem to have made it available in many of the major supermarkets - great idea and much more convenient.
